thread3/14/1940: Group Forms Organization to Honor Trusty SteedsOn this day in 1940, livestock leaders met in Fort Worth to form the American Quarter Horse Association. Among those in attendance were rancher and quarter horse breeder Anne Burnett Hall and King Ranch president Robert J. Kleberg. The series of meetings led to a charter, by-laws, and election of officers of an organization to “collect, record and preserve the pedigrees of Quarter Horses in America….”

2/ The origin of the American quarter horse dates to colonial times when the speedy horses earned fame for their performance in quarter-mile races—hence the name. The quarter horse in Texas is forever linked with the history of the open range and the cowboy. After the Civil War cattlemen needed swift yet sturdy mounts to drive longhorns to northern railheads in Kansas and elsewhere. Quarter horses were mated with mustang mares to produce a strong, speedy equine with great endurance.

@Lonestar What a cool enjoyable thread. Thanks. "Steel Dust, a bay colt with a short back and compact muscular body, arrived in the Republic of Texas as a yearling before the Mexican War and came to be described as the fastest horse in Texas. In spite of poor eyesight, he won so many match races that soon no one would challenge him. His jockey rode bareback and smeared the stallion’s back and withers with blackstrap molasses to help him stay on." 👍

@Lonestar I decided to watch The Black Stallion last night on TCM because of this thread. Another favorite, featuring a Mustang, which is part of the Quarter Horse lineage along with Spanish Barb, is Hidalgo with Viggo Mortensen. He actually brought all the horses he rode in the Lord of the Rings movies back with him from New Zealand, he loved them so much. True horse lover. Also another cool thing that happens on my Birthday, along with Pi Day!
