@MarieGreen When Thomas Wictor talked about a neighbor he cared for "because there was nobody else" he became Ma Buckley to me. I wanted to build him a fortified mansion hermitage.That was on my mind, and also because I believe that people like Ma Buckley are the absolute epitome of MAGA, regardless of their political leanings.

@StevenDouglas Ma Buckley was a Saint! Thank you for sharing this story. My Dad (who passed last month) also said “It’s a great life if you don’t weaken.” Stories such as this remind me that we can make a difference (positive or negative) with our actions or words when we interact with people on a daily. Things we say & do can leave a lasting impact. My Dad was always trying to teach people & give them a leg up. Ma Buckley was always trying to save them. Bless them & all like them.

My grandmother died after childbirth when my father was eight. She was the reason for my dad's high degree of literacy relative to his younger siblings. Grandpa gave up on his eight children after Grandma died. His two resentful, evil leaching sisters moved in to help "care" for the kids.Alice had it in for my dad. Beat him with a buggy whip. Every day. Ma Buckley saw thin blood stripes in his tee shirt and took over caring for him as much as she could.She armed him with self-respect.

@StevenDouglas @MarieGreen Thank you for sharing. We all have sad stories but I have a tendency to look at people sometimes and wonder if they just sail through life with no worries or troubles! Then I quickly think-we can’t or won’t get through life without them-it’s how we deal with them that makes our lives good or bad, happy or sad, fulfilling or empty. That woman, Ma Buckley, was placed in all your lives for a reason! As are all the people in all our lives-we just have to figure out why!

@MadBeachBimbo I would have treatment on Thursday, Friday I was flyin' high, would work like a bad dog at the gallery, doing 3 days work in 1 then Saturday morning, I was so sick from the chemo, I couldn't get up except to hit the bathroom. It was awful. But it did the trick in ridding me of the tumors in my breast and all cancer cells. Miraculous! It changes you tho, I'm not the same person I was 5 yrs ago.

One more thing about Ma Buckley.Dad said she was a fierce, fearless she-bear around bullies. Anyone abusing or attempting to dominate kids in her (then) large yard were chased away immediately with a heavy broom stick. Only one was ever given a second chance.Ma Buckley was all of four and half feet tall and would go after ANYONE with that stick. Not threatening: PUNISHING. Beat them like a dog until they were gone.Once gone, it was right back to happies and go-luckies for everyone.

Ma Buckley was a "simple" woman in my dad's boyhood neighborhood who befriended, fed, protected and tended to all the abused and neglected kids (Dad included). Quite beyond "an amazing woman".Her "children" numbered in the hundreds. Dad took me to meet her once, in her little trailer, when I was in my twenties.Ma Buckley had two favorite sayings:1) "A little powder and a little paint'll make you look like what you ain't!"2) "It's a good life. If you don't weaken."Stay strong.

@RoseSchellin My dad made his (own personal) peace with Alice in later years.He said that Alice had a horrific life of her own. Her and her sister Ethyl were hookers for years during the Great Depression, both seriously abused in the process. Those two man-haters turned my dad into an extreme woman-hater, who then later got most, not all, of that under control.I was on a floor watching TV once when Alice gently pulled my hand back from my face."Don't pick at your face, baby."Surreal.

ALL are pre-forgiven.Which also means that nobody's special. AND, a clean slate doesn't mean a fresh line of credit.They're all free, and SO AM I. EVERY TIME. I harbor NOTHING. @RoseSchellin One last. I wasn't always a COMPLETELY forgiving person. Only mostly. I still held many "passive" grudges. The decision to be ALL forgiving was made after my life plunged completely into hell at age thirty-three.I was finished, and all grudges were like a millstone around my neck.Forgiveness was key to MY survival and only incidentally worked some amazing wonders in my new life going forward.

@StevenDouglas Read this and pondering. My fam went through such a similar scenario, but a generation back.My great-grandparents had 8 kiddos in Logan County, Ohio. My gramps was born, 2nd from youngest, 1919. Great grandma Bertha, gorgeous dedicated Mom, and the head school mistress/teacher of the farm community died of cancer when Grandpa was 8. So it really inspired me when Thomas posted the "Zulu" clip and where it was said, "There's no-one else. Just us." That really helped me.
