@Truther I was asked if I wanted a regular MRI or an open MRI. I said I didn't care. They put me in a tube that touched both shoulders, and then they turned on what sounded like a hammer forge.I'm super claustrophobic, but I know it's all in my mind, so I wasn't upset. When we were done, they were amazed at how calm I was. People say it's the worst experience of their lives.Lucky, lucky. lucky people...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYRPZ4xbz7g

@ThomasWic @Truther I had a brain MRI once. Got probably 6 or so concussions from hockey, and an especially bad one lingered for a long time. Loud as hell in there, even with ear protection. I’m not claustrophobic at all so that part was fine for me. I almost even went to sleep. But the weird part for me was feeling the center of my head. And I mean the phenomenon was that I literally felt “touch” there just like if someone touched my hand. And, I could “remember” that feeling...

@Truther Beautiful thread. One of the things I do is color with my children. I pour SERIOUS deep thought into how I want it to look and be textured, and bask together with my kids' in quiet contentment. The whole world disappears and time stands still. Thank you, cathartic Crayola.

@ThomasWic @Truther I didn't know there was such a thing as an open MRI until now.My pacemaker prevents MRI's as a possibility for me. Which I always thought good because I have never managed to manage my extreme claustrophobia.

@ThomasWic I used to be super claustrophobic until I got cancer. Now I get scans (PET, CT, nuclear bone scan) every 4-5 months plus I have a couple MRI’s per year since all my orthopedic parts are failing. So far a shoulder and a knee. Soon, I’ll need surgery on my scapula. So I don’t have time to indulge my fear anymore. Perspective.

@StevenDouglas @ThomasWic @Truther I actually had an open MRI scan just yesterday. It is so much better than the regular, or even the so -called "wide" MRI.

@ThomasWic @Truther (Was this in the distant past? Are you okay?)How did you manage that?! Do you use mind control on yourself, as in reframing the experience? I use that as a tool to get through life. Reframing. Were you in the open MRI or the regular MRI? Even the open one is claustrophobic...Claustrophobia is a bitch!

@StevenDouglas @ThomasWic @Truther I’m sure the technology has improved for the ‘wide’ and ‘open’ MRI units that were being introduced shortly before I left Radiology. At that particular time, the resolution of these units was less than that of the standard and was mainly used for patients who were too large to fit inside the bore. The length of time required for an MRI study is/was a contributing factor for those with extreme claustrophobia. Sedation was part of the prep.

@ThomasWic @Truther I'm also very claustrophobic. This was early on when I had my first MRI and I was offered no hearing protection. Those huge magnets making all that noise actually became rhythmic and I fell asleep.

@ThomasWic @Truther I got an MRI on Jan. 27th during my hospitalization for COVID.It wasn't an OPEN one, for sure. They inserted me to my shoulders but left my head outside the Tube.I was ordered to hold my hands up flat against the machine in an awkward position as they took the MRI.It WAS loud, but then again my head wasn't inside the tube. The Nurses were perfunctory in manner, but thanked me for being such a good patient as most people have to be told things over & over.

@StevenDouglas @ThomasWic @Truther I do an MRI every year to monitor my cancer. I did it a couple of years ok, but then 2 years ago claustrophobia kicked in and there was no way. They said " well we have a new machine that is a little bigger let's try that "It's maybe 2 or 3 inches bigger but way betterI still don't like it but I can do it.

@ThomasWic @Truther Reading this thread gave me a moment of claustrophobia but I recovered. Three MRI’s in a year. AllClosed with the mask tightly fit over my face and shoulders. The three strokes were very abnormal so they wanted an MRI for each about three months apart. The first part took 16 minutes and the latter 40. I had a few moments of insanity but kept it to myself and finished. The tech telling me they’d have to restart at the beginning if I needed a break did it.

@ThomasWic @Truther Great first thread, Truther. An MRI was relaxing for me.Gardening for hours used to be my workout/escape.Thomas, the work you did under your house to quake-proof it must have been like a sustained MRI.

@ThomasWic @Wendy @Truther I'm claustrophobic too (big time) and had a couple scans this year. For me, if the tech is chill and I close my eyes before taking in too much stimuli from the room - machines, tubes, weird mechanical thingies...I can stay calm. I agree you WILL do it when you are trying to survive. It also helped my son went with me and I knew he would save me lol.

@Truther Its amazing to get away from all the "noise" sometimes. We all should do that once in awhile.Im sorry about your brothers passing.I can understand your poor mothers confusion having been the caregiver of a loved ones elderly mother. When everything starts stressing me out,I usually take my dogs for a run, create recipies,or get lost in books/music, lol, nothing as physically demanding as your repairs.Minor repairs only.Yesterday I tried fixing the toilets flow valve. No go,needs a new part
