Has anyone used the Linux clients for MS Teams? The company I work for is moving from Skype (and other tools) to Microsoft Teams. I was surprised to discover there are DEB and RPM packages for Teams. I'm not sure this is progress, or not.

@fitheach yes. It works to the extent of the windows client, i.e. clumsy AF.If you don't need the (video) telephony part you can just as well open the teams website in a chome-ish browser tab.

@fitheachMostly, I would say it's better than Skype (as low of a bar as that is). What I think is worse about it, is that it offers all kinds of nonsense next to chat/calls, so you'll suddenly get OneNote Documents and Excel Sheets in some tab in some channel that you're in, or random files uploaded into there.Combine that with it still being un-encrypted and I think, not available for on-premise hosting, and you've got the biggest security vulnerability in your infrastructure right there.

@friend I only ever used Skype for multi-person calls (conferencing). For that limited use it was OK.The company (IT dept) are envisaging us doing lots of fancy stuff with Teams. They will be sorely disappointed.

@fitheach I've used both Teams and Zoom on Ubuntu, but not frequently. Works OK except no virtual background support. But I have a workaround for that.

I also note that Microsoft want my 'phone number in return for downloading the Android app.I'm not keen on that stipulation, even if it is only for my work 'phone.

@wim_v12e I've never used actual video in Skype, I'm always represented by one of those static images. I don't see that changing with the move to Teams. Even if it did, I will only be using it in my office, so, I'm not concerned about the background.

@fitheachI'll never understand why, when the European Court of Justice had just banned Microsoft 365 from all schools and businesses due to it being a huge security risk, the NHS decided it was a good idea to hand over control of their data and communications to that very same setup!?#unbelievablebuttrue

@fitheach @gunchleoc I run the rpm on Fedora, and it works spectacularly well. The UI is shit but that's the same in all platforms. The app itself works better than the web page, and for me at least works better than Teams on Mac OS. Voice and IM and calendars and screen sharing work great (again aside from UI annoyances). For data you're ok with sending through MS's servers it's fine. And MS has a big page on security and Teams. It's not end to end encrypted, but is encrypted in a way that facilitates IT departments spying IIUC.

@tfb What a time to be alive. Imagine, only a few years ago, talking about running native apps, from Microsoft, on GNU/Linux platforms. people would've thought you were mad, even thinking such things were possible. It is good to know that the app runs well. I will still try the web app first (meant to do it this week), but will also try the Desktop app. Thanks!@gunchleoc
