I have been successful at my job because I love what I do and I care about efficiency and the institution... As a result, I've been promoted several times and relied upon a lot for my input on things outside my domain. My greatest concern is that I will one day be promoted _out_ of what I love to do.

@x51 I'm in a similar situation.I've turned down an offer of promotion to management because I wouldn't get nearly as much real work done. Fortunately, a good friend of mine got promoted instead. It turned out to be moot though as a reorg swept through and they demoted all the recently appointed managers, returning things to the way they were previously.

@urusan They made me a manager about a year and a half ago, but I still program 50% of the time because of resource constraints. But reading the tea leaves, it seems like they're going to put a few more people under me, which would make it impossible for me to code. I'm hoping it doesn't happen. I'd rather be a SME than manager, but that's not how my company works 😕

@urusan Where I am, you pretty much have to move through the management chain to get compensated for your experience. It sucks.
