Ok looks like a Raspberry Pi 2 B will need 60 watt-hours worth of battery capacity if I want to run it on solar. Good news is that the Harbor Freight 100 watt solar panel is more than capable of providing that, if my calculations are correct

@Orwelldonesteak Here's how one publisher did it..."This website is a solar-powered, self-hosted version of Low-tech Magazine."https://solar.lowtechmagazine.com/about.html

@Orwelldonesteak how big (physically) is that panel?

@Sophistifunk each of the 4 panels is 14x40”. Based on what @onan shared with me I might not need to wire them all up to get the power I need. My biggest problem is gonna be figuring out where to put the charge controller and battery because my house setup isn’t optimal. I’m not sure if I can safely stick them outside even if they’re out of the rain since it gets up to 105 and humid here

@Orwelldonesteak neat. Those panels are too big for me since I'm a lowly renter and can't do anything permanent to the place, but I'm glad somebody's out there building and experimenting. Low power computing has a lot of low-hanging fruit to pick yet.

@Orwelldonesteak Every physics problem is a physics opportunity. If you're going to have regular high heat, turn that heat into an additional source of electricity.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermoelectric_generator@Sophistifunk

@onan @Orwelldonesteak I'm a fan of the steampunkish charm of a sterling engine, myself.

@Sophistifunk I’m actually renting too but I rent an entire house because I live in farm country so I’ve got plenty of room. It looks like if you want to run an SBC it’s better to have a bigger battery than a bigger panel(according to the experimentation that https://solar.lowtechmagazine.com/ did, they were running theirs off a 30watt panel in Barcelona)
