@CBrewer Mine were medium on the small side. More than plenty, they could have been small apples. It would just mean more crumbles vs. fruit, and crumbles are the best part!

@StevenDouglas Have you tried making this with monk sugar? While this is great for coffee & tea, I find mixed results in baking but I would love for it to transfer. Monk sugar is 100% natural so no headaches or side affects. However, its molecular structure cannot be absorbed by our bodies so it has 0 calories.

@seeker Yes, life must go on in the best and worst of times. I snapped at my six year-old son during the election steal. He had done something wrong but my response was out of all proportion. That seared me. That part was MY fault, not his, and I let him know it right away and made my peace with him. Can't get swallowed up in demons forget who we are at our core. If we do, they win. @DrWeevil I used sweet apples for this recipe this time (Envy, very sweet), as there is not a lot of sugar in the recipe like there would normally be for an apple pie using tart apples. The nice thing is that it works no matter what I've used. If you can eat Jonathans or Granny Smiths straight from the tree, you'll love this recipe using them because it only makes them better.

@TerriC I use quick oats. Soaks everything in just fine. You can use old fashioned (the original recipe I tweaked called for that only), but they stayed firmer than I wanted so I switched. Another thing you can (with O.F.) is pour boiling water over the oats, let them soak for a few minutes, DRAIN THEM and press out all the water in a sieve, allowing them to cool before folding them gently into the mix LAST.

I always thought I might not be using enough butter. I'll try it your way and see what happens!There are so many good apple crisp recipes...one time, I used cinnamon "thwock biscuits" (straightened) and latticed on top!

@TerriC AND you can up the butter a bit. It's very forgiving. If you're in doubt about butter and don't mind the extra fat, increase it. Whatever isn't absorbed up top goes dripping down over the apples to the bottom.

@StevenDouglas Speaking of butter...in the high school where I taught, our cafeteria manager turned me on to a product named Whirl. It's a butter substitute that works great for baking, frying and sauteing. NOTHING beats real butter and it can't be used for apple crisp, but I use it in place of vegetable oil in a lot of recipes.

@tinadiz @TerriC Betty Botter bought some butter but she said, "This butter's bitter!", so she bought a bit of better butter, put in her batter and made her bitter batter better. I use a longer version of that as a warmup exercise when I'm doing voiceovers.
