@penguin42 > You need to add some numbers, what do you use [poll]> - A physical calculator> - A calculator app/program> - gdb> - bcNot counting mental arithmetic, my honest answer to this, about 70% of the time (), is "a web browser".Yes, that's absurd. And yes, I'm vaguely embarrassed. But I'm often already interacting with a browser, and the search bar is just a ^t away.(The other 30% is split between shell expansion `echo $((1 + 1))`, some other REPL I'm in, and pen and paper)

@penguin42 Matlab or Emacs. At least one of those is usually running anyway.

Only very recently discovered"type `C-x * c' to start the Calculator"in #emacs where we find we can set the precision:--- Emacs Calculator Mode --- P-uuu:%*-F1 Calc: 24 Deg Emacs Calculator Trailprec 24 pi>3.14159265358979323846264(Previously I would, very rarely, use the *Scratch* buffer to evaluate expressions)@stsquad @penguin42

@penguin42 If integers, probably a shell expansion. Otherwise python repl or a calculation app ("arity") on my phone, whichever is at hand.

@Coffee Yeh, if mastodon allowed another option I'd have put python.

@penguin42 "no calculator at all" – is not an option?? πŸ™ˆ Not even "a sheet of paper" – although you may also not need it.

@mansr @penguin42 I just use a terminal with bash, e.g $ echo $[1234 + 5678]Unless I need floating point math, in which case I use the url bar in chrome. These two are always running anyway.

@penguin42Is β€œi add them up in my head” a valid option? For a certain upper limit, obviously.

@penguin42 @arnd $[] is a silly bash addition, part of the GNU embrace, extend, extinguish effort.

So the reason I kicked off this poll was that for a long time I'd been using bc; had considered using python from time to time, but I'd started using gdb in the last few days - it's nice short command name, does FP by default, but you do have to 'p ' for each expression.

@penguin42 confession: I use gdb when I need to do arithmetic on hex numbers, because I can never remember the elisp syntax for them.
