Why do people still confuse nationalism (love of one's country) with Nationalism, an ideology of the totemic state born in Central Europe and which, when combined with Socialism produced some of the more brutal regimes the world has ever seen?Nationalism has nothing to do with love of one's country.

@Debradelai same reason why others are enamored with socialism?

@Debradelai Yes! Patriotism is love of one's country; nationalism is nation-based collectivism. Many people today don't know what half of these terms mean, unfortunately.

@Debradelai I agree with your interpretation of the nationalism-Nationalism dichotomy. However, the term was born in 19th century to describe a movement aiming at uniting almost a hundred of small german-speaking states. My opinion - the term should stay there. We shouldn't assign any new meanings to this word (either with capital N or not). Let's leave the term where it belongs - in Germany. We should use our own terms that describe love to the country.

@Debradelai IMO these terms are deliberately confused by otherwise smart people, or least people who claim to be smart. A nationalist policy (such as MAGA) exposes the futility of the "one world" crowd and how damaging to US interests it has been...

@Debradelai Even worse is when they attach epidural pigment as a precursor to "nationalism".It gives them an avenue from which to virtue signal.

@BDMack @McKie I gave you the clue:Philosophy of the totemic state emanating from Bohemia...Concentrate in the difference between nationalism as a civil characteristic (America, with people of various backgrounds united in their loyalty to the country), and Ethnic (Czechoslovakia, Germany, Fascist Italy) that erect the state as the totem of the tribe.

@BDMack Not even close. Chauvin proposed nationalism based on language culture and tribe...long after Johan Gotfried Herder (275 years ago) who managed to be a nationalist and a pluralistic at the same time, greatly influencing our Founding Father's.Chauvin was an aberration, a proto Nazi-onanist.

@JeanLynch I only regret that I have but one life to give for my country. For years I paid homage to Nathan Hale at his statue in front of City Hall in NY.Would that we all hade his strength.
