@luke i wouldn't even say that devs are doing those websites, more like generic code monkeys who only know how to stitch couple of wordpress/joomla plugins together on website and do a bit of SEO, at least that's what it looks like judging from websites you've showcased.I don't entirely agree on "know how to say no to your employer" because situation might be different and saying "no" might be equivalent of being fired and end of career. Sure you can say no, argue against things but someone else on the project might do it instead.Not to mention that most of those websites pretty much exist for sole purpose of making money by spending least amount of effort and money possible - hire some freelance 13yo code monkey for less than minimal wage (or not pay them at all) that can stitch together a wordpress website, tell them to install over 9000 plugins and hire a copywriter for even less to write content, do some SEO to appear in top results on google and watch ad revenue grow. Such things are annoying but nobody cares about them, not even people who working on them, only one who cares about it is the one who gets ad revenue.

Another type of webpage that trends now is “7 ways to fix problem X in 2021” they then give 6 useless advices and the 7th advice is to buy their crappy software that does who knows what to your computer. @lukeI mean, his example site also lacks any kind of navigation so that's not a fair comparison. Granted, any decent nav (even nice looking css ones) shouldn't add much more bloat but in my experience nav is usually a good chunk of loading because a lot of sites pull external libraries to make it work or are heavily scripted for effects.

@lukeAlso, telling these sites not to use ads and trackers is pointless because that is their revenue source and pretty much the sole reason they exist. A lot of the other functions (comments, suggested articles, etc.) are also designed to keep you on the site longer to expose you to more of their ads.

Great video Luke. Another angle on this that would fit today's agenda is the environment. I seldom see it mentioned, but the amount of energy (most people streaming too instead of having files locally) and the need for people to buy new computers because the web (and apps/operating systems) are terribly inefficiently written would make a lot of people upset, if they understood.

Ugh. Yeah the modern web is a disaster. And I think it's a pretty damning indictment of the soydevs building these sites that the Javascript/npm/webdev ecosystem is such a dumpster fire; the tools used to create these sites and webpack build systems and npm pulling in a billion transitive dependencies to create these "modern" web sites is shocking. I can't believe people spend their careers dealing with all of that crap.

Holy shit, the difference in the non-bloat version of the page was just beautiful :'). Great examples. It's amazing what websites get away with these days. Funny thing is many people driving Prius' etc for the environment probably pay no heed to their websites, bandwidth usage etc, despite the fact the modern web is creaking and groaning under the strain and causing more and more data centres to pop up everywhere.

I've been toying with this idea of making my own search engine that only indexes webpages without bloat and javascript. Maybe have a checkbox or something that also shows you sites that have inlined javascript since that's usually not very bloaty (apart from google analytics that is). At the same time the search engine could penalize for things like using cloudflare, images from other domains and iframes etc. Of course coming up with good heuristics for automatically judging sites and ranking them would be a decent bit of work but would probably be worth it in the long run.This had me thinking that the set of small information heavy sites is probably not that large and it could work quite nicely as a local index so the user doesn't need to connect to third party service and reveal his searches to them.
