@nagot If I'm hosting important files for people other than me I would use a computer with a RAID setup, or at least daily backups to a off-site storage.

@hundYeah, I definitely will use raid. I heard it works with single-board computers

@nagot I've never heard of people doing RAID via USB, which might be the only way to connect multiple hard disks for most single-board computers. As far as I can tell RAID via USB and similar conditions would not work as a "hardware RAID", i.e. supported by firmware of the computer. Hence it would need to be implemented with a software RAID, which might be slower and possibly prone to other issues. But this guess should be double-checked. Good luck!@hund

@floppy @nagot There's no reason to do hardware RAIDs today. :)

@hund @nagot It's been a while for me when I looked into RAIDs more. Thank you for the video link! Will have a look later.

@hundI have always thought that only hardware raid exist 😹 You opened my eyes. Really good video@floppy

@hund @floppy @nagot But still safer and easier, right? I was thinking to get hardware RAID and connect it via new USB or thunderbolt connector to get the speed, the RAID is just to make backups safely and with a RPI to access to those data stored and managed by hardware and if I change the RPI for something else I will still be able to use that RAID without touching anything, I could even use old motherboard with thunderbolt via PCIe.

@blkpws @floppy @nagot I don't see how it can be safer to add more hardware that can fail. If it fails, you also have to to find comptabile replacement hardware if you want to save the data.Setting up either should both about the same. If you use something like openmediavault, it's very simple.

@hund @floppy @nagot I didn't know about that OpenMediaVault, looks like it rocks for this stuff and there is a lot of information and guides using it with Raspberry Pi so that's my new goal. 🤩 Thanks.

@hund Watched the video. Awesome, thank you for the link! Learned something new this year. :)When I heard about ZFS the first time it wasn't as potent I belive. The performance seems really amazing. The flexibility of ZFS is how I hoped a hardware RAID would actually be. @nagot

@nagot I have some pi4's and they work well. Also didn't see you mention it, but take a look at Pine64. They have a great community, (they make really neat open source targeted hardware) and Singleboard computers worth a look. I recently got their "Pinephone", Pinetab (Linux Tablet) and they are a lot of fun. The neat thing about all of their products is they generally use the same underlying hardware (mostly).

@nagot Yep and they really are a service to the community. Prices are very reasonable. The forum is a place where the community can get involved, even help design new things like the keyboard for the Pinephone, and the coming Pinecom which will be a LoRa based communication device! Pretty neat stuff and all worthy of checking out. :)
