@thor@pl.thj.no and just for an appeal of authority of my own I was born in one of the fattest states, georgia, where people loved their fried chicken and collard greens.

@phanein you could be rightbut i wonder where all the absurdly fat people you have come from. they seem common enough in America, and extremely rare elsewhere, despite plenty of opportunity to remain sedentary and buy unhealthy food in many countries.it isn't exactly universal but America seemsto lean more that way. i recall a school lunch schedule from the US that i saw, and well, it wasn't exactly health food.

@thor@pl.thj.no I'm just saying we can't be the first world-second world country that has no health care, poor education, and works extended hours without a lot of vacation while also having all the time in the world to go home and make all this food that will take hours of the week to make. We don't have time. We're not great, and we don't have time. We eat bland food with extra salt and hot sauce.

@phanein well, okay, so there is some truth to the diet issues then, or that seems to be what you're effectively saying. it goes against what Americans would *ideally* like to eat but there are circumstances that force it.

@thor@pl.thj.no Now you're broaching into a topic me and you could vastly agree on. American school lunches are cancer. Actually they're so bad my grandmother refused to send me to school without lunch. That's because they play toward minority, which isn't a bad thing, they play toward children's whose only meal will be that day. So they load you up with like 1200 calories of the most calorie dense stuff.

@phanein see in other countries, at least the developed ones, focusing on feeding calories to poor kids was something we did prior to the 20th century because poverty was more widespread.in other counties, school lunches reflect general diet trends.

@thor@pl.thj.no I'll say a big reason why the US is fat isn't meals, breakfast lunch dinner, but snacking. If I could convince americans to cut out snacks I would but I'm just one man. That and they don't count the calories of stuff they drink. You gotta know by now that Americans drink not only the most soda but are top 3 of the most beer.

@phanein so perhaps dinner isn't at the core of the issue, though i suppose both me and the African wife used it as a verbal shorthand, since dinner in most countries is the main source of calories.

@thor@pl.thj.no I think that's problematic thinking because you're basing what the most does against the minority. For america dinner is where you're supposed to have the least amount of calories cause you'll sleep soon. Breakfast is where you need to load up and then work your way down. I'm not saying either side is wrong here just differenting ways of thinking

@phanein it's possible that a small dinner isn't unusual in countries where that meal is shifted toward the evening. in the Nordic countries, dinner is typically in the afternoon and a distinction between it and supper is made, where supper is a small meal eaten closer to bedtime. breakfast tends to be modest, rarely a cooked meal.

@thor@pl.thj.no Yeah idk why we differ? Maybe it's the heat here? For me if I don't have an energy feeling breakfast then I'm drowsy throughout working out and work. I need that extra kick of calories in the morning to get me going on my daily stuff and I think most Americans feel this way.

@phanein well, carbs are typically good for that. in the Nordics it's typically slices of whole grain or rye bread with toppings, maybe some orange juice. coffee. not much protein. lunch depends. some will have another bread meal, others will have a cooked meal, especially in urban areas. Sweden leans more toward cooked. don't know about Denmark.

@phanein Norway gained full independence in 1905. constitution was written in 1814 though and a version of the parliament existed but more as an autonomous region kind of thing. the Danish rule was the 400 years running up to 1814. the Swedes ran it afterwards. the thing that caused this situation was the Black Plague. it killed off unusually many Norwegian elites and intelligentsia, leaving the country without people qualified to govern it.
