They said the temp. would fall to 1 degree last night. Didn't stay up to see if they were right, but I know it got cold enough. On a bright note, we weren't victims of the 'rolling blackout,' either.Oh, and since I was smart enough to leave the kitchen sink dripping overnight -- no frozen pipes !Now, getting ready for storm #2. Forecasters are predicting the worst of it will miss our area, but we're supposed to get a little snow/ice anyway.

@Lonestar. So sorry. I live in the northeast. I'm used to this weather. I hope this cold snap ends soon for you. I can imagine all the damage.

@Voxsusana - My dear wife is a prepper and she doesn't even know it! We're good on groceries, and a neighbor also offered to share if we run short of anything. Nice neighbor. Our daughter/SIL live about 20 miles away, and we've got a standing offer to invade their home should we lose power/heat.Still have a day's worth of fire wood in reserve, so our future is looking great.

@7toedcat We WERE used to this weather when we lived overseas in the military, so we know what to expect. People in this region aren't used to it, nor are our homes built to withstand extreme cold temps. And we'll have spring-like temps by the end of next week!

@Lonestar I'm on a well and have been out of water 30 hours or so. Was doing OK until we lost power for 5 hours - my well heater broke on the up and down return of power. Water froze - I replaced the heater, the replacement failed, I put another heater in - still no water.

@TimToolMan Man, it's tough being without water. On a well system here too - but the township maintains it. So far, so good.

@Lonestar My water came back this morning. All except a sink and a tub in the master bath. I have a heater in there warming it up.

@Shiloh @TimToolMan - ERCOT's got both the governor and AG looking into their affairs. If you're a shady enterprise, those are the last guys you want looking at you real hard.

@serpent8 @7toedcat Well, yes - but our home was built in 1968, and it isn't practical to do the renovations it'd need to be brought current. If we were looking for that sort of a fix, I think we'd just sell it instead and move to a more 'modern' structure. Of course, we'd make sure it was as weather proof as we could afford, too.

@JackthaToad @Lonestar Northeastern Kentucky took a huge wallop Monday evening and this is our second round of misery from these ice storms and no electricity in the last week. We are on “Plan B” at The Compound and we have a heat wave at 34 degrees out side today.

@7toedcat @serpent8 Well, I think that *if* this is the opening salvo of extreme weather that accompanies the "solar minimum" then builders are going to have to take a hard look at weather proofing in places where it wasn't necessary in the past. Our homes and infrastructure just weren't engineered to withstand temperatures this low - for this long.Add in the incompetence of politicians killing the electricity, and it became a perfect storm.

@Lonestar @serpent8 I'm familiar with southwest housing. You're right it's better to move. Insulation is cheap. I did my house. The attic or scuttle space needs to be insulated. Tons and tons. Keep the heat in.

@7toedcat @serpent8 you're right - insulation is a relatively affordable fix that reaps big dividends.

@Lonestar @serpent8 yup. A huge cascade of failures. I think the politicians are more focused on green dollars than energy management.

@serpent8 @7toedcat I've been following Matt Risinger for a few years now. He's got the right idea about weather proofing homes, and practices what he preaches.https://www.youtube.com/user/MattRisinger

@serpent8 @7toedcat Risinger is predicting that our codes won't change much, and that surprised me. I would have thought they would.I'll defer to his expertise though since he's an *active* home builder.I do know they have to balance the impact of codes with affordability and practicality, too.And this also assumes the code compliance inspection process is up to snuff and above board.

@Lonestar @serpent8 I'm an engineer in construction. The codes always get rewritten. You take and add as necessary. Usually after a disaster. Sandy changed our gas and water installations.
