Imagine my surprise when the #Nitto Pearl stem I ordered showed up in black. Apparently, that was the default selection on the retailer’s website and I wasn’t careful.I’m still going to use it. Everybody with Nitto stems has them in silver, but I’ll be one of the few with it in black. Also, my bike’s frame is dark grey so the stem will somewhat match. Would be kind of cool to have some custom designs put over the black in bright colors.

@tk @retiredguru @slowfallinward A pretty piece nonetheless. Wasn't aware they did black parts. Painted or anodised, if you can tell?my period-correct SR stem is black on a white frame but matches my black leather furniture, kind of gives it an anti-glare look. Almost a two-tone.

@tk Agreed. A little stenciling, or airbrushing from an talented individual. Monogrammed with your name would be cool. Any of these would look great on a black stem. Hit it with a few coats of urethane clear. 👍

@tk Yep. Black anodized aluminum. They can anodize in a myriad of colors today. You can also do the anodizing yourself, on non-anodized aluminum. Not that difficult at all.@awlt @slowfallinward

Not bad! This is my first quill stem without a removable faceplate, and the installation was relatively painless. (Original) #cycling #bicycle @awlt @bicycling @mastobikes @retiredguru @slowfallinward

@tk is it? Odd. I suppose you don’t own really old bikes or parts. @retiredguru @slowfallinward

I still need to get new bar tape. Was hoping to reuse the old tape, but it had some tears in it.

@awlt @retiredguru @slowfallinward Most of the quill frames were used with bars that had a 31.8mm clamp diameter, meaning either a Nitto UI-12 or a stem converter. I've had both.

@awlt @retiredguru @slowfallinward Oddly enough, a 31.8mm clamp would make it easier to thread standard 23.8mm bars through a stem without a removable faceplate, but I don't think there's much demand.Glad these bars need a 26.0 stem. They barely made it through. 25.4 would've been a struggle.

@tk it can be a hassle yes. My old bars were worse to swap stems on than these current ones. I’m in the market for a shorter stem with at least the same degree of rise. @retiredguru @slowfallinward

@tk @awlt Looks good. How do you like having the front rack clamped onto the stem? This is the first I've seen this type of mount. I'm not keen on it, a no-no on my Miyata, because I have the stem up to its limit out of the steering/fork tube. I would be inviting sway and eventual cracking of the stem from the stresses caused by a heavy front pack. Of course, this is just my situation.@bicycling @mastobikes @slowfallinward

@retiredguru @awlt @bicycling @mastobikes @slowfallinward The front rack isn’t directly directly connected to the stem. The decaleur is what’s attached to the clamp.

@tk @awlt Since I can't see where the assembly ends up, am I right in assuming the other end connects to the front rack? Or, is this backstop/hanger for a handlebar bag?@bicycling @mastobikes @slowfallinward

@retiredguru @awlt @bicycling @mastobikes @slowfallinward The other end connects to an attachment on the handlebar bag. Most of the weight of the bag is on the rack, but this extra piece is to add stability.

Wrapped my own bars for the second time ever (first time in years) after getting this set up. Really enjoying the padded #Brooks microfiber tape. #cycling #bicycle
