I can't believe how many ads pi-hole blocks...

@syscrash Does pihole only block content based on blacklisted url by not resolving the DNS or does it do something else?Theoretically speaking if I had all the blacklisted url, could I simply append those to /etc/hosts (currently I have 49714 domains in there) and call it a day? Or would it not be as effective because pi hole has a trick up its sleeves over and beyond DNS blocking?

@vivaldinewton It acts as a dns on my local network so all traffic has to go through it. Yes, it uses a blacklist.

@syscrash Thanks. Is it able to block YouTube ads as well? If yes then I will look into setting it up for my entire network. I had in the past tried to host it via on my Ubuntu Touch phone but for some reason the blocking wasn't as effective, maybe I should pay more attention this time around with the setup process and probably on a raspberry pi.

@syscrash Well then SkyTube on Android and FreeTube on Linux it is. The /etc/hosts blocking method is very effective against egregious and privacy invasive domains already plus I don't allow third party cookies at all, I think this pretty much gives me a similar coverage as Pi hole without having to maintain anything, except for updating the hosts file from time to time.

@vivaldinewton What I like about pi-hole is it's ability to block ads on all my devices.

@syscrash @macxcool Pi-hole running now, taking over one device after the next with DHCP. The dashboard and admin interface is superb... I finally see what is going on in my network. Thank you guys! 🚀
