@Gina I think it depends on what part of the government you work at/for, really. I've found my team to be quite bureaucratic in some situations but we gain a lot of quality and accountability through that. We can't really permit to make errors, so this is just how it has to be.

How bad can it be?Imagine you're building a website with a coworker abroad and your version control system is sending print-outs of your code to each other via mail.

Some government organizations here still require full printouts of source code for approval.Given how bloated modern software is... we are talking about A LOT of paper.

@basil @Gina @tregeagle Slight tangent but my son worked for one of the 'Big 5' accountancy firms in London as a junior in 'Financial Audit'.After 7 weeks, he sat in a status meeting and told the assembled colleagues including senior management - 'The main reason we're behind is because we do a lot of manual reconciliation and cross-checking (twice). This is very inefficient and most of this could be automated - we don't even use Excel macros. The answer isn't to ask us to work long days and weekends but perhaps to consider working a little smarter...'He was interrupted by his immediate manager and mentor who politely told him 'Michael - that's all very well *and we have actually heard this before* but it's always been this way'.He jacked it in after another 7 weeks. It's the 'we have actually heard all this before' line that gets me.

@basil @Gina @tregeagle Mind you, there's people hiding and lurking in dark corners of large IT companies. My daughter initially worked in 'Bid Support' for HPE.Get a bid and some numbers from a sales guy. Massage it into a corporate Word template. Check the numbers tally up. Revise after the sales guy wants to give a further discount. Rinse and repeat. She worked through them like lightning and was quickly bored.Very early on, she was told by her manager - 'Laura - please do not send this complete bid proposal to Sales before next Wednesday. Otherwise he will expect every single proposal to be turned around in 24 hours. And word will get out'.She's still there - different department, kicking people into shape with more awards and promotions in 5 years than I've enjoyed in 30 :-)
