SteamOS is kind of dead, but GamerOS is building on the same idea of a distribution built for couch gaming: https://boilingsteam.com/gameros-an-enhanced-version-of-steamos/ #linuxgaming #linux #gameros #steamos #distro

@boilingsteam I have read about GamerOS but if it is like SteamOS, it is too Steam focused, probably also the reason why SteamOS failedfocusing on Steam only is no option on PC, even for a Linux gamer like me. Even focusing on gaming only is no option, even for couch GamingPC, at least for me.

@Myrrdin SteamOS failed for many reasons, but I don't think it was the focus on Steam that simply killed it. Rather the fact that there were very few games to play in the first place.

@lanodan @boilingsteam @Myrrdin eh. Biggest problem is that prebuilt steamboxes weren't very popular and existed, just like steamos, for sake of existing as an option for normies. It wasn't much interesting for DIY people who would just use ubuntu/debian or arch/manjaro they're used to instead of learning new distro.t. not a distro hoppert. owner of a steambox with debian on it

@lanodan @hj @Myrrdin That's a simplification. It had its own compositor too, and and self-upgrade mechanism outside of Steam as well. It's not just a debian base with a Steam theme or something.

@hj @lanodan @Myrrdin @boilingsteam I'd buy a prebuilt steambox that could play the big AAA games on Steam. I _want_ to buy a pc that plays steam games. But it's something like half the price to buy an xbox. Look at the Linux tech tips video where he tries to match it. Even that guy couldn't pull it off and he had a ton of insider knowledge like which Xeons are being phased out in datacenters right now.

@fluffy @hj @Myrrdin @boilingsteam @lanodan Don't mean to butt in but I'd argue is it wasn't competitive to mainstream consoles on the market, since those are generally sold at a major price cut in order to make the majority of profit off of game sales on the platform itself. PCs are just generally more open, more options where to buy games and the like, so it was half inevitable. I want to see more couch based PC games as well but I think it's more likely to come from in-home streaming of some sort, since it matches the demographic for who'd actually want to play those games on the couch lol. Little wordy but hopefully that makes sense.

@fluffy @lanodan @Myrrdin @boilingsteam >small form factorSilverStone ML08 (picrelated)>quality controllerjust buy xbox or ps5 ones, they work just fine.>new componentsgenerally, PC components outlast consoles, since you often don't need to replace everything, allowing for granular upgrade. I put my old 5yo GPU into picrelated and it still works just fine, on 4K screen even. Main reason why i even bothered to upgrade my main PC beyond GPU is because i wanted to assemble steambox and get rid of intel.image.png

@fluffy @hj @Myrrdin @boilingsteam @lanodan Yeah if you're wanting to play games and get better performance than just regular consoles, Stadia isn't a terrible idea. Just really dependent on your personal internet and stuff like that. Not to mention you don't have direct access to the game necessarily lol. There's also that Shadow service that essentially just lets you use a virtual machine on their servers with better hardware and play off of that. Not sure how well that'd work on the couch stuff but another thing to consider I guess.
