@AngryDuey @tacit Yes it is...of sorts. It's based on Romal law, same as the Napoleonic code.

@Debradelai @tacit Yes, I finally got up off my ass and peeked at this magic internet thing. Turns out Swedish law derives from Roman law, by way of Germanic law rather than thru Napoleon. đ
Anyhow, the original observation that US law maintains innocence until proven guilty is a great point. Americans do take this for granted, as it is part of the genius of our great experiment in self-governance!Imagine living someplace where they systematically suppose guilt until innocence is proven!

@Debradelai @AngryDuey @tacit From the moment my son was born I used the correct word for whatever we were talking about. His vocabulary is very large now.Contrast that to a public school reading teacher for 7-9th grade who said they only read chapter books. (Generally speaking they are simple books reserved for newer readers)Tried to tell here that. "NO. we read books with Chapters Only"Like Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit?OH NO! Those are too complicated. Must wait to 11th grade

@Debradelai @AngryDuey @tacitThis lady also said they only read what is on the list provided to them!no wonder folks are so under educated nowadaysThey dumb it down, give low expectations. Student gets hammered if he wants to learn more.Talk about dulling ones zest for learning! She made me mad enough at her folly I wanted to ask her black self if they read Huckleberry Finn, But I refrained as we were in public and inappropriate.Least she didn't bring up the suppressed minority thing

@Debradelai @AngryDuey @tacitBTW I'm not much of a racist. I view all non Scandinavians with the same dis-Danes But When I listen to all this talk of "disadvantaged people" and then see someone in that group perpetuating the stereotype projected on their own group it is annoying.Makes me want to say something pointed to jar them from their lethargy. In this ladies case all it did was disturb her shopping experience. Don't think she got the point at all

@Debradelai @EarlThePearls @AngryDuey @tacit. My parents subscribed to Readers Digest. It was kept in "the library" where the porcelain plumbing was also housed. I'd always read the feature "Increase Your Word Power" and slip one of the new words I'd learn into dinner conversation.

@tacit @Debradelai About that the presumption of innocence in the United States: I'm sorry to say the last four years have proven otherwise - the presumption of innocence is upheld only in courtrooms where the judge is unbiased. The number of biased judges has increased tremendously in the last 20 years.

@EarlThePearls @Debradelai @AngryDuey @tacit My daughter in second grade had completed the fourth grade reading materials halfway through the school year, and abruptly refused to read anything for years when the teacher told her she couldnât read The Wizard of Oz âbecause it wasnât at her level.âThat setback was the last straw for conventional schooling, but she is still extremely stubborn about reading and seldom reads for pleasure, as she had been before this incident.

@Debradelai @Santiago @tacit We'll disagree on this one. Yes, people are "entitled" to an unbiased process - both an unbiased judge and an unbiased jury. In MANY cases it doesn't happen. FACT: Jurors don't put aside their prejudice, sympathy and biases and neither do SOME judges.

@Debradelai @Santiago @tacit Let's take Timothy McVeigh. A mom's testifying about how her daughter ran to the window after being dropped off at the nursery. "Mommy, I don't want to stay. I want to go home with you." The mother motions to the jury how she held her palm to her daughter's palm through the glass window, blowing kisses as she walked away. The picture of the little girl is on a huge monitor in the courtroom. And ALL the jurors have put their sympathy aside.

@AmareVita @Santiago @tacit You might as well move to Venezuela, then, since our entire system rests on that one peculiarity.I guess I now know that YOU cannot be objective.

@Debradelai @Santiago @tacit I have no desire to move to Venezuela. While our system is not the best, it is the best in the world. As for the personal attack, It's easy to silence someone you disagree with by saying they're not objective when you have no knowledge about that person's experience. It's also disrespectful. Again we disagree. It's not the first time.

@AmareVita @Santiago @tacit A personal attack? Are you daft?Look up "reductio ad absurdum" in any good encyclopedia. And don't ever play the victim with me again.YOU claim nobody can be objective. Therefore you can't. This idiotic response proves it.Now, please, untag me.I have no desire to be submitted to your emotional rants. This is the last time we disagree. I can't stand bad faith.
