You DON'T achieve immortality by becoming a serial killer. We remember the crimes but not the names.Only a tiny handful will be forever remembered. The rest of them fade away. Becoming a serial killer is itself a sign of a deeply mediocre mind. It's what a loser does.I never watch movies with superhero serial killers. I saw Silence of the Lambs and the one with Edward Norton, but I don't remember the second one.

I also watched Manhunter, which I also don't remember.I walked out of the one with Anthony Hopkins eating Ray Liotta's brain.I think that had Gary Oldman in it, but I don't remember.Never watched either version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I don't even know the story.Hollywood loves serial killers because Hollywood is populated by people who want to BE serial killers. That's why they turn serial killers into chefs and philosophers. But what it comes down to is THIS:

@ThomasWic Black Sunday and Silence of the Lambs were great thriller novels. Hannibal, which I assume is the movie you refer to, was a travesty, a betrayal of the protagonist in Silence of the Lambs. I "walked out" of that one too, in the sense that I threw the hardcover novel in the trash after I had read it.

Giving in to animal urges is EASY.What's HARD is learning and improving. And I'll tell you something:The more you improve, the more you can see. Things come into focus. It's like you have X-ray vision. This is why I never try to stop figuring out Trump. It's absolutely clear to me why he didn't testify at his trial. It would be like testifying to a roomful of baboons.I just listened to a guy say the craziest thing I've ever heard.

@ThomasWic Black Sunday and another great Harris novel, Red Dragon, showed the ineffectuality of the mass murderer persona. Silence of the Lambs departed from that. Hannibal was maybe an illustration of why you should not do that.

He began by saying that anti-American protests and flag burning should be illegal, AND FIVE SECONDS LATER, he complained about the censorship of conservatives. This is NOT a man capable of critical thinking. All you're hearing right now is static from people with mediocre minds.YOU are much smarter than they are. Why?Because you're TRYING TO IMPROVE.It's not being "right" that matters. It's trying to find the RIGHT ANSWER.

@ThomasWic I may be wrong but for me, if you observe Trump through the lenses of Sun Tzu, the only conclusion you could have came up with was that he wasn't to testify during this trial. While Sun Tzu recommends seizing opportunities mistakenly offered by the enemy, he also strongly recommends you to choose the time and place of your attack. Or shaping your own battleground to your advantage (pretty much like Zaitochi who, if possible, will always prefer to fight at night or in the dark).

@ThomasWic I had a teacher in high school that was a WWII Vet, flew in the Berlin air lift. He gave us a lesson on the flag. He pulled the flag off the chalkboard and asked a kid what it was...The kid says it's the flag. The teacher tells him to touch it, "what's it made of?".Cloth? Canvas? - The teacher then drops it on the floor.Another kid exclaims, "you have to burn it now!".Teacher picks up the flag, brushes it off and asks, "what's different?".

What I don’t understand is the lack of curiosity I seem to see everywhere but here.Case in point: Tonight’s Beard Blather. I learned more from you and Saul talking about the Fed and the gold standard than I would have learned about the subjects anywhere else in such a short period. Thanks for the BB episodes. @ThomasWic This thread reminds me of something I’ve tried to impress upon my adult children. Wisdom in large part is knowing what you DO NOT know and striving to fill those gaps. When I was in my teens and twenties I was the smartest person wherever I went.....I knew everything there was to know about everything. In my own head.In my 40s and 50s I’ve come to appreciate those things I don’t know.Because...they inherently create opportunities for me to gain knowledge and improve myself!

@ThomasWic One of the most memorable discussions I ever had ended with one humble man saying, "I don't know." That sent me on a most wonderful journey to discover the answer that he honestly acknowledged he didn't know. It took 15 more years for the answer to be revealed, with MANY more answers revealed along the way. The journey was tough, and frustrating, but it was so worth it. All started because one man said, "I don't know." It's a touchstone moment in my life.

@Osterberg @ThomasWic Silence of the Lambs was an amazing thriller because it had two villains - one locked away tight and one on the loose. And the one locked up tight was arguably much scarier. The sequel with Liotta - which I didn't finish watching ON DVD - destroyed the working formula. They should never have let Lecter out unchecked. It's like having the Jaws shark turn into Land Shark. He was just a refined Buffalo Bill after that. BORING.
