His real name was Theodore Isidore Gottlieb. He came from a wealthy Jewish family in Düsseldorf and spent his young adulthood as a partying playboy.By his own admission, he had no skills. At the age of 32, the Gestapo arrested him and threw him into Dachau concentration camp until he signed over the family fortune for one Reichsmark. The he was deported to Switzerland with only the clothes on his back.He was a chess genius, so he played chess games for money and lived in flophouses.

When the Swiss deported him for being a bum, he went to Austria, where Albert Einstein--a family friend--helped him escape to Britain...where he was interned AGAIN.Finally he was allowed to leave for the US, arriving here penniless. From this point on, we know absolutely nothing about his personal life, except for the fact that he somehow became an actor. He also began performing as a monologist. His show was unlike anything that came before or after. It can't be described.

He sat at a desk on an unlit stage, wearing all black, his face lit only by a candle, and he ranted.Since he presented himself as dead serious, he fooled people into thinking the persona was the real man. Here he is with Jerry Lewis on the Merv Griffin show.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2Fg2H3sucI

All we know about Brother Theodore is that he was NOT THE MAN HE PRETENDED TO BE.Everybody who knew him said that he was the sweetest, most helpful, generous person they'd ever known. He'd go backstage to meet aspiring young artists such as Eric Bogosian to encourage them and tell them that they were going to be very successful.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2dhjKPfaXY

Theodore lived to be 94. He told Bogosian at the age of 90 that he regretted no longer having the sex drive he had at the age of 80.Theodore's headstone reads thusly:As long as there is DeathThere is hope.At first glance, it's hilarious black humor. It is.BUT.Think of the OTHER meaning:

There is always death. It can't be escaped. What, then, is Theodore saying about hope? He's saying "There is always hope."I agree. There is always hope.Never take the persona as the real person.AND.Just because there is a persona DOES NOT MEAN that the person is not sincere. As Brother Theodore's self-chosen epitaph proves.END

@ThomasWic I saw Brother Theodore do his one man show in NYC in the early nineties. It was one of many strange and wonderful experiences I had in my college years at NYU. It was his classic "standup tragedy" show that he did for decades in a little theater in Greenwich Village."The best thing is not to be born. But who is as lucky as that? To whom does it happen? Not to one among millions and millions of people!"

@ThomasWic great thread. I had no idea he existed and I am glad I now know. In the past month alone, you gave us him, zatoichi (a find and a half!) and turned mohulland drive into a masterpiece I would have ignored otherwise. you know how to pick ‘em

@ThomasWic Incredible clip. It’s probably a very rare occurrence when Jerry Lewis is just trying to “keep up”, or even plays anything close to the straight man. Brilliant stuff.

@ThomasWic He was a great guest on Letterman before David turned into a liberal twat. One of the funniest lines, Brother Theodore remarked on someone’s looks “She makes Bella Abzug look like an airline hostess!”

@ThomasWic Great thread - I haven't thought of Brother Theodore in years! I saw him perform in the '70s in a little Greenwich Village theater. I don't remember much, but I do remember being very entertained. It was one of those things, that if you lived in the Village, you had to eventually go see. Quentin Crisp too around that time!Didn't know about theepitaph - perfect!
