In today’s video, I demonstrate three #gemini #browsers which I found to be useful and interesting; Kristall, Amfora and Bollux.Kristall: https://github.com/MasterQ32/kristallAmfora: https://github.com/makeworld-the-better-one/amforaBollux: https://sr.ht/~acdw/bollux

@chriswere Web as app-delivery platform doesn't benefit just corporations. Most popular services are now available to anyone on any OS. If social networks, video streaming etc. would be available on Windows/Android/Apple, most people wouldn't be able to switch to anything else.

@chriswere Didn't mean to imply you do, sorry. :) I just wanted to point that out. There's been a lot of talk lately about the web going the wrong way and that it should have stayed just the document publishing platform. It's weird seeing this from people who are benefiting the most from it's multiplatform nature. But maybe gemini is a good way to have both at the same time.

@ondra No worries, I do agree with you.Gemini is certainly not trying to replace the web. In many ways it's letting the web be the app platform many want it to be and then to have gemini as something else.

@ondra @chriswere What might've been better, though, is if things like social networking, video sharing/commenting/streaming etc. had been developed as open protocols based on open standards rather than (in most cases) proprietary services delivered over http. That way, the free software community could've created as many varied clients as they liked.(I get that that boat has sailed, of course. But it's a shame we've settled on the least elegant solution possible.)

So, how does it compare to Lynx? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lynx_(web_browser) or browsing in Emacs?

@uoou In an ideal world. :) But there's a certain rhythm to innovation. It's easier, faster and much more lucrative to develop proprietary technology and it takes time for the rest of the world to catch up, commoditize and standardize it. It's much harder to start by drafting open standards without existing implementation, financial incentives etc.The web is one of the platforms though with the benefit of working on top of others, so better that than a closed one.@chriswere

@ondra @chriswere Yup, that's entirely fair.I do hope that Gemini represents the start of a trend towards extricating the various things we've shoehorned onto the web and thinking about how we could do them better if we did them discretely.

@uoou I'm honestly really curios whether and where gemini will manage to draw the line. Videos? Forms? Or will it form technical steering committees and keep developing in the web's footsteps... :)@chriswere

@ondra @chriswere They seem to be pretty adamant that, in terms of *features*, what it is now is what it will always be.But yeah, I take your point of course, we've heard that before :D

@chriswere three Gemini browsers? There should only be two, otherwise it makes no sense.

@chriswere I love the stream of good content you @HexDSL and @uoou are putting out. I tried Kristall today after watching your video but Lagrange is still my favourite.

@chriswere way back in the day, Slashdot was run by a couple geeks from their home. News for Nerds. It's time for a gemini style of news site like the old Slashdot was...

@jeena@tube.jeena.net obviously the web has a much higher adoption/ network effect, so Lynx will have access to much more content, however most web pages aren't designed for text only, so you're more likely to have things break or not work. Gemini is designed from the ground up to be a faster, more restricted experience, so any Gemini capsule should work with any Gemini browser.

@chriswere@share.tube Great video. Thanks! You say that you like Gemini, partly, for its improved accessibility with things like screen readers. While I love your huge text banner and how it looks, I've heard complaints from someone who regularly uses a screen reader that banners like that are a screen reader nightmare. Try opening one and getting it to read your capsule and you'll hear what I mean...
