@thegergo02 because rooms are a shared state and you can't actually "host" a room, they're not owned by any server. It will affect users in your non-matrix.org room if they use a homeserver that engages in shadowbanning, and indirectly affects you.

It's harder to notice when your message is still visible, just to something like 10% of its usual audience. "Well I'm still getting a few likes, so I guess I'm not shadowbanned" people figure. There is concrete evidence this is happening, as I've compared screenshots with others (i.e. a tweet is visible to me, but invisible to them).They've also been engaging in a kind of reverse shadowbanning as well, to prevent discussion. Many started noticing around October last year.Your message still gets out to some people, and they can even reply to it, but large swaths of those responses (sometimes 100% of them) are invisible to you and each other.Idk if there's a term for it because it's not like one person getting muzzled, but groups of users collectively getting deafened.

I feel bad for telling my friends to make the move to Matrix now, though we didn't have a server.XMPP looks like a more robust IRC and won't be good enough to convince people to ditch Discord. I might start looking into that and Jitsi, or just consider the internet enemy territory from now on, give my friends on here my phone number and let my computer collect dust.

This is related to two specific users who have become quite infamous for spam on matrix to the point that @kakol made an admin bot to deal with them.The user I believe this feature was primarily meant to address is a guy known as "atlanticat" who was banned from a handful of rooms by another user, "Sharp". In response he has manually created over 500 accounts on various homeservers to ban evade and spam rooms with some homosexual cartoon known as "Hazbin Hotel". Here's a random collection of ban messages from Handrub Management during one of this guys "raids" to give you an idea.
