Thread:First off, I typed this up before I just wrote it. I didn't want to miss anything, so it'll get it tooted out pretty quickly. Anyway:Many were sharing their stories about drugs, etc. I only mentioned my brother was an addict and the drugs took his life. My brother had a lot of problems. He was legally blind in one eye. He had to go to special education because of it (the blindness mind him a slower learner). He had difficulty making friends. Of course dealers always know how to spot these troubles in young people. Then they get them hooked.

I was 10, he was 14, when he started smoking pot. Not a big deal for a lot, but for him, it made him a monster. He had a chemical imbalance in his brain and it was affected greatly. The high put everything right, when he came off of it, it went back the other way and it turned him into a monster. But only when on the drugs. When he didn’t do them, even with the imbalance, he was an absolute sweetheart of a guy. The type that would give you the shirt off his back.

Life with him on these drugs was difficult. The pot was just the beginning. He began getting on harder drugs. They made him a worse monster. I remember sleeping with my parents because we didn’t know if he’d go off the rails and try to kill us in our sleep.

You’d walk on egg shells because you were afraid of what might set him off. He could be physically abusive, but mainly he was emotionally abusive. He was in and out of the system. If he wasn’t in a rehab, he was in jail, or a detention center. My teen years were spent either living in fear or having to go visit him.

I don’t blame my parents. They loved him and knew this wasn’t him. He was a terrific man who had a problem. They stuck by him. They stuck by me too. They didn’t give up on me because they were focused on him. They did everything for the both of us.

But spending your teen years like this, I also ended up having problems. I think it’s what really pushed my social anxiety to the forefront. I also have stomach problems because I was always in a state of panic. There are times too much spice can cause a reaction. Nervousness can make me ill in the stomach even to this day. But I still loved, and will always love my brother.

I remember at one point, I actually did do tough love. I was around 17 years old. I said, “Michael, this is getting old. I’m not talking to you until you straighten up.” It worked. You see, he and I had the best sibling relationship you could ask for. We were best friends. We meant everything to each other. So he tried for me to get his life on track. All he wanted in life was to be like my dad - have a family and be something.

He’d slip up and do his drugs. His drug of choice were percocets. (Because of his addiction, I actually refuse to be prescribed percocets for pain.) But he tried. He stopped stealing from us. We still had some temper issues, he’d still be a real asshole if he was on them. Sadly in his last few years of life, he had an addiction to heroine.

I don’t actually know what killed him. They put down ‘accidental’, but were unable to determine what he “accidentally” died from. The cops did no investigation. Had they done so, they’d know the people who “found him” were lying through their teeth about everything. Not that it probably would have mattered. Back then dealers wouldn’t have gone to jail. The best any of us could have hoped for would have been obstruction of justice.

A year or so ago, one of the black belts at karate, her father was a retired cop and he looked over all our stuff. He told us those people watched him die and that one of the drugs in his system was him trying to get clean. It took 15 years for us to find out this out.

I believe in comeuppance. One of the assholes who watched him die got stage four cancer and suffered on his death bed. His wife (at the time) lost her nursing license for stealing drugs. My brother's girlfriend… I have no clue what happened to her. But I imagine she has jack shit in her life.

My family was always a mess and we were estranged, but he was still my brother and I loved him, whether he knew or cared. You can't rid yourself of that loss or pain. Thankful that I always told her I loved her before we hung up towards the end of her life.I always regret not letting my dad know that. He died instantly of a massive coronary far from home. That taught me a lesson. Always let those you love know it. You never know when someone (including yourself!) will be called home.

Her wish was to be buried, but her family thought it was cheaper to cremate her & sell her ashes to those who wanted them.My portion is in a small beautiful granite urn. I will bury her by the Little Goose Creek in the shadow of the Big Horn mountains. She loved both water & mountains. She also wanted a church service. My family will say prayers over her as we lay her to rest.

@jeauxy @Phokencougie @umad80 Sadly, this is not a typo. Her husband already had her replacement lined up. He is a partner law firm. But it was her two daughters who steered the ship. They Didn’t want possible inheritance money thrown away. I was too angry to reply. My two daughters did this on their own for me. They paid for the ashes and the urn through my sister’s daughters. I will never speak to them again. . But God has truly blessed me with my family.

He and his wife had a good Valentines but argued before he left home for work. He died in the hospital before she could get to him. She has not really moved on since. I always tell my wife I love her, send her a text saying I love her before a plane takes off - etc. I want my last words to her to be good ones.

He was a pilot for a commercial airline, had a gorgeous wife and trashed it all. Then he went for our mom and dad and me. @stephanieanne @umad80 It is heartbreaking, no? Mark left, and is, a hole in my heart. We are 3 1/2 years apart and were very close in childhood. His alcoholism started very early, suddenly immense at 16. He wrecked my Mom, my consistently absent Dad (who would shunt cash and credit cards to him to undermine numerous family intervention/rehabilitation efforts), and my grandmother. It still is going on. I have distanced continually over 3 decades, but his abuse and opportunism of Mom is hard.

I will fulfill my sister’s last wishes even if her family will not. She sits in her granite urn atop my fireplace mantle looking out at the snowy woods surrounding my house. @NurseRatched It doesn't, and anyone who says it does is either a liar or never experienced it.It's been 17 years for me, and there isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about him at least once. Mainly good memories, but sometimes my heart just aches when I think of him because I miss him so much.

She's very clingy though. lol I think that's more of a lab thing.And Bear... oh, that boy is the sweetest scaredy cat. I think the poor guy was abused and it pisses me off that anyone could do that to a dog. 🤬

@ChaplainEric @umad80 @NurseRatched The love of my life died beside me unexpectedly in 2011 at 3:11 am. My grief is part of me 24/7. I still cry over his not being here with me. It's especially difficult thru these horrid times. Rich was my soul mate & my protector. When he died, I felt like a child left alone in the dark. Losing a spouse whose the other half of you is a loss one never gets over. I can't remember how many nights I wake up; look at the clock & it's exactly 3:11 am.

@HunDriverWidow Similar experience here. My beloved also died in 2011, somewhere between the hours of 3-4am, but he experienced a heart attack while up and in the bathroom. No, you never really recover from it, that is for sure.

I asked if she wanted to tell me something. She nodded but didn't speak. I asked if it was bad. She said oh no. Then it's good, I asked. She said ooooohhhhhh y e s! Tom was having a difficult time & wrote to tell me that he found the video awesome. He went on to tell me that his aunt had recently passed away. Prior to her death, Tom walked into her room & found her putting on makeup. She said her husband, a deceased Marine who served in WWII, was coming to take her with him.
