@stux i would love to help fight COVID-19 and i would even accept being spied on during pandemic but:1. I don't trust my gov2. It's coded like shit3. it's not decentralized (even server source code is closed source)4. it's not used widely enough5. it's not enforced in any way6. collection and use of data is not transparent7. several privacy and security scandals8. no transparency reports

@stux @p4trickn Coded like shit and government project are pretty much synonyms. Here they were forcing the elderly 80+ people to got through one of those systems to apply for the vaccines. It was so broken that the SMS verification worked 1/5 times, the info like age was only checked on the client side and the personal data was part of the URL (as all personal medical data should) with you having to agree to it being used in all kinds of ways, because someone "forgot to update the ToS".

@stux Those applications are pointless. They rely on people actually being honest about their medical condition and I know a lot of people that are infected did and will make an effort to hide it as much as possible in fear of being quarantined, with all the consequences that brings on us. It also relies on tests being accurate and not having any false positives/negatives which is an utopia right now. And then of course there is the tracking/privacy issues. Specially when this "technology" uses a Bluethoot connection with other devices, which is insecure and sometimes unreliable depending on the device. All in all is just another useless attempt to control something our politicians can not control because they are completely useless. So it's a clear 'no' from me.

@clayogra that's very interesting! Maybe you and I just keep up with the news about all that stuff and most don't. I once interviewed a guy who ran a Tor forum and asked him if it was a scam. He said, "Who am I scamming with a forum?!" But it would be easy to scam people that way. I think people look at social media the same way - they don't see how it could work against them. @stux

@stuxGiven how badly the app in the UK was messed up, before they then decided to let Apple and Google in on the data and the need to have Bluetooth on at all times I decided it was just a white elephant app not worth installing on my phone, especially as my phone doesn't and hasn't left the house in all the time I've had it. I very rarely take my phone with me when I go out.So chances are I'd only get false reports from it as others went past the house.#corona

@calculsoberic So true!! I guess a large part of it is the complete lack of any digital education in early school stages. I think that leads to an extremely superficial view on software: people think it only consists of what they see. "Well, if there is only a clean interface in which I input my data, and the only people I notice receiving that data are the people I intend to, then what's the problem?"@stux

@stux Looking at the other replies I'm lucky that my government (Germany) has developed the app as open source and decentralized (after major backlash from the public, e.g. Chaos Computer Club, against a centralized approach)If I am informed correctly, it is even available on F-Droid for those who use degoogled Android.

@stux In Ireland we have one but it doesn't work on my phone and gives an error. I have a feeling it's because my phone is degoogled but I haven't really looked into the source code (https://github.com/covidgreen).I might try submitting an issue to get it fixed or at least find out why it's happening. It also seems to use the Google/Apple exposure notification api so that is also a concern for me.
