ThreadJust to put it all to rest:I'm not moving to Vegas after all.My brother went all funny in the head and basically told me that I can't move in with him.I was expecting this, but he wasn't expecting my own counterattack.I now have my own house, free of charge.Our parents' house. So all's well that ends well. This is for the best, since his plan was for me to be ejected into the unknown, with no place to go.He had no idea that I knew he was going to do this.

See, all five of my siblings are identical. I'm the only person in our entire tribe who ever underwent psychotherapy.All my siblings deny that they need it.Untreated pathology gets worse.I didn't want to live with my Vegas brother, because I'd lived with him before, and it was no picnic.He's one of those people who loves to lose control and say and do whatever he wants. If you ever try to talk to him after one of these episodes, he gives you the silent treatment.

My brother kept telling me that he's a brand-new hardass, so he tried his hardass act on me.I showed him how REAL hardasses do business.So now I just have to move next door. No culture shock. No starting all over again at the age of 60. No nightmare of finding new doctors and getting new insurance, etc.And he has no choice.His penance for doing this to me is that I get our parents' house. He can keep his palace and his biker friends, who I never have to meet now.

So this is all for the best.Adult American children live furthest from their parents than any people in the world. They FLEE.I have no problem living in my parents' house. It's just a house. My R brother lives about 20 minutes away here in Texas, while the liberal one is enjoying the fresh air near San Francisco.🙄I can text him, but I can’t abide a phone call, he always ticks me off. @ThomasWic In ‘02 my stepfather offered me my parents home if I would move back to KY. After Moms stroke , he couldn’t handle anymore. I turned it down bc was going through divorce etc and didn’t want to move to this God forsaken town. Years later, I returned and I’m stuck here anyway. Tragic comedy. Having home is my own would have helped the sting , I’m sure. I’ve survived some terrible times not knowing where to go So, I think it’s wonderful that you have it.

She can be incredibly loving and kind and then turn and strike like a cobra for some perceived past wrong. My heart wears armor with her. @ThomasWic A lifesaver, and you know how to take care of what you have: the house, and yourself.Frequent moving has taken a toll on me; I can't keep doing it the same as before. Yet I have to do at least one more, albeit much differently, and there's no guarantee it will be the last one. But I'm being given the least painful way to do this one, and for that I am grateful.

@ThomasWic Some families are like that but not all, I am sorry that it hasn’t been better for you, but you found a sort of peace with it. I find it more difficult to relate to my siblings as we grow older, we are all so different as individuals, on the other hand, my middle aged and younger children spend a lot of time with us, If you can imagine 28 people who actually take vacations together and all major holidays, we even have a few friends along and we always have a wonderful time. @ThomasWic I have no brothers or sisters so I coudln't flee. My parents were silent generation and I was middle of Gen X so I knew I'd have to stay close when they got to be 70 or so. Oddly they didn't really 'break down' until the early 80s so I guess that's evidence of the lifespan going up. Dad went down in the Winter of 2017 and passed away in April of 2018 in a rest home. I live with Mom who is 87, in a wheel chair, and has COPD. There is nobody else to be here for her. So I'm here.

@ThomasWic my mom was severely abused as a child. When she got married and had my sister and I she wanted to stop the abuse cycle. She went through intense therapy to heal herself and have a healthy relationship with my sister and I. Her family mocked her and told her she was doing the devils bidding. She cut them out! She chose to continue therapy and heal. We have an amazing relationship now. Our mom is our best friend. We had a healthy happy childhood because she broke away from her family!

@ThomasWic @Autism_mom_Autism_strong I lost my older brother to a cancer 30 yrs ago. Our relationship was similar &different from yours. He loved &loathed me. His illness scared me &deepened our separation. I was there as much as I could be while his disease progressed.There was always a disconnect. Your brother's retreat from you was inevitable. Your powers conflict.It is so sad we can't just love each other unconditionally. A barrier from birth couldn't be breached. I still love my brother.

@ThomasWic Moving in with a sibling isn't ever a great idea IMO. The only viable option is to command your own castle, no exceptions. Never know when the other person will lose their mind for whatever reason. Buffers and barriers are for the better.

He beat the crap out of all of us.When I moved in with him in 1993 after my girlfriend dumped me at her parents' insistence, I found it almost impossible to live with him.I didn't want to live with him in Vegas, but he begged me to. After he made new friends, he no longer needed me, so he dumped me.It wasn't a surprise. He was getting more and more unstable.

My dad and brother have not. Therapy brings up a lot of pain and anger if you’ve been through trauma. But guess who the angry people in my family are now: the ones who never confronted their past. Good for you that you sought therapy and that you know how to protect yourself from the “psychic vampires” in life.

The twist to our dysfunction was money. It was ALL about money. They were rich, my family was. Somehow from early ages my brother and I both craved something more, and of course acted out in inappropriate manners. @ThomasWic Thank goodness you figured this out BEFORE the move. I moved 200 miles away from my town of 30 years, Portland OR. I was always close to my brother, but his wife was the one who HEAVILY encouraged me to move there. I never did get along with her before, but she hoodwinked me into it and I fell for it! It took three months before the truth came out.
