I wonder if I'm the one cyclist who prefers rim brakes.I don't hate disc brakes, but they aren't a panacea for me#cycling #bicycle @mastobikes @bicycling

At least rim brakes never require camming or reaming post holes in frames to properly face them.

@tk @bicycling @mastobikes I thought the same, then someone walked onto the road in front of me and I impressed myself with my disc brakes. When they're good, they're really good.

@vic That just meant that you waited too long to replace your worn rim. It'd be like if you broke a wornnchain while climbing up a hill and fell over, then said you'll never use anything other than shaft drive every again. Gotta stay on top of maintenance.

@tk @bicycling @mastobikes i was a fan oft rim brakes too until my back rim bursted right in my face when I inflated my tire.It was because of extensive usage of the brakes on my commuter bike.My wife has disc brakes on her bike and they are much safer and reliable in wet conditions.

@Calypso1 @tk @bicycling @mastobikes Without Rimbreakes my rims wouldn’t wear off. So I’d never have the possibility to build some tubeless-wheels without feeling like wasting perfectly good parts. But yeah, Rims live about 5 years in my case (lots of bad weather and steep hills).

@nvi @Calypso1 @tk @bicycling @mastobikes I would have to buy a new bike as my actual road bike is rim-only-brakes 😅I'd love to have disk brakes on my bike, but rim brakes are so simple to set, fine tune, change, clean,... and I have several friends who had to bleed their hydraulic system 2 or 3 times in a row because of bubbles NOT GOING AWAY 😡 or oil leaks between coupling/joins and brake levers 😭

@VoronoV @Calypso1 @tk @bicycling @mastobikes Yeah, I'd need to buy a new frameset as well. Although, if my front-hub breaks one day I'd replace it with a Disc-one so I can swap out the fork for a disk fork one day.As for hydraulics, I have worked as a bycicle-mechanic for years and I'd only advise them for people who can pay a mechanic or are capable of maintining them properly themselves.

Stuff like this makes me wonder about technique. I’d usually go around the person crossing, behind them so their path isn’t blocked, rather than hard stopping. That said, I rarely have issues with hard stopping with rim brakes when it does happen. #cycling #bicycle

@tk @Calypso1 Wtf?I never said I’d ride my rims until they break. That’d be stupid. The 5 years is about the timeframe until they reach their minimum thickness and get replaced. Also, was I complaining? I think you didn’t get the ironic tome I’ve written this in. Disclaimer: I’ve been a bicycle mechanic for years and don’t require ant technical advise.

@nvi @Calypso1 I did have a co-worker who did let their rim wear until their wheel collapsed and ended up in the hospital.

@tk @bicycling @mastobikes Prefer rim brakesEasier to maintain, esp. on an abused commuter bike. Damn public bike stands, easily damaging wheels and disks...But always kept in mind: Breaking performance is mediocre in winter even with special „wet weather“ brake pads

@tk @nvi you're right, I did not check it in advance. I didn't say that it was the fault of the rim.brakes..but a worn rim is something that won't happen with disc brakes.

@Calypso1 @nvi An argument for getting away from chan drive, too, because it's also exposed to the elements.

@nvi @tk I'm no bike mechanic and have still problems to detect a worn rim myself but my mechanic replaced them against som extra thick some andra touring rims, so they should last longer this time (this will also be the last time for my current bike from 2009).

@HeyRay @tk @bicycling @mastobikes yea, damn public bike stands. I love my disc brakes, but "parking" is an issue.
