@SamualLea Digital Ocean Droplet. Setup takes like 10 minutes, but I remember I had issues using that... Can't remember what they were off top, but anyway I instead to about 8 hours to set up my own VPS to host it using the guides on Mastodon's website... In retrospect having my server on my own VPS is better than Digital Ocean since I can serve my Instance from wherever I want in the world and anonymously even if I so choose...Hope I helped.

@MakeAmericaFreeAgain I'm curious about the performance requirements. I have a NAS that runs VMware and a solid but dated Pentium workhorse that I can upgrade memory to 8 Gb. I'm guessing either would serve a small guess list.

@SamualLea the requirements are minimal. I was surprised to find how smooth things have been going for me with only 4GB of RAM and 2 CPUs, but then again (as you mentioned) its not like I'm hosting hundreds of people. Besides, if it ends up an issue I'll just upgrade the server. I initially started with 8GB of RAM and 3 CPUs to be safe, but that was overkill so I downgraded for the time being and I notice no difference.Honestly, one could probably get away with less...

@MakeAmericaFreeAgain That's great! Thanks so much for your help! It's very encouraging.Do you have any metric for your guest list compared to the bandwidth? I'm very limited by bandwidth.And, do you know of an Federated profile database that interrogates with Mastodon? I don't even know what key words to Google... It seems reasonable that such an application should exist but if I found it, I didn't recognize it.

@SamualLea If you insist on running from home though I would try to keep my list of active users under 25-50 people and I imagine you should be okay, but I've never really given that too much thought because by the time I got into Mastodon I have largely moved to the cloud anyway due to similar concerns in the long-term in addition to the other benefits of using a VPS as I mentioned previously.

@SamualLea no I don't, but I kind of want to host a PeerTube instance still maybe. I have considered renting rack space and running my own VPS service, but I've fallen away from being very active with it all tbh.
