@rudolf @randynose I used to really enjoy that show bak in the day. Where is it aired these days?I have seen robots fighting in-person too, but it was a much lower-level amateur thing. Still entertaining, especially because of the amusing MC.

@john @rudolf S5 E8 - On the Discovery Channel. - Their Seasons have to be from when they started to carry the show, as #Battlebots has been happening for 20 years, from what I understand. It's a fun show to watch with my wife, as we guess who's going to win each fight. Having watched it for a couple seasons now, it's even a little more fun, as you understand some history with some of the teams.

@randynose One of my favorite shows since the 2000s. I'm just waiting for the bots and arena to get bigger (such as using those machines with the giant saws that cut limestone) or maybe even remote mechs. It'd be interesting if something like this was implemented like in some anime where countries don't wage wars, but compete in things like this to determine things (not to say that some would not try to find ways to cheat).

@randynose @rudolf So I downloaded all the Battlebots and started from the beginning. 😂 My wife's not super into it, but my daughters watched with me. And they both dreamed up their own bots. And then they argued over which design. And of course they involved me, and I tried to make some nuanced (and apparently very unsatisfactory) point about executing well. So then their designs evolved. They drew schematics. 11 tells 9 that her strobe light is illegal. 9 says it isn't. They ask me.

@randynose @rudolf I wasn't sure. 11 looks up the official rules and practically memorizes them. They start discussing costs and funding mechanisms.At some point I had to ask myself, "Wait, are we actually doing this?"But alas, they are kids. At some point they switched to playing Smash Bros., and Battlebots is all but forgotten.Kids are kinda neat.

@john @rudolf Where did you get the old episodes? OR should I ask? Discovery lists their current season as 5, but I know there's like about 20 years of history of them battling.

@randynose @rudolf Bittorrent. As far as watching we're still on the original Comedy Central series, as cheesy and rudimentary as it is.I don't know how they get "Season 5" out of this numbering. @randynose Honestly I wouldn't be too excited to add an activity with that much commitment. But I'm kind of happy they enjoyed envisioning it that much, and also that I'm not the one holding them back.

@randynose By the way, the rules she looked up are CLEARLY not what's going on in the Comedy Central version. Like, apparently they dropped every weight class other than super heavyweight. They also have much tighter regulations around compressed air now. And the walker weight bonus is 100% instead of the original 50%. And fire is allowed now... but not as a weapon?
