I'm in a πŸ‘ TREAT YO SELF πŸ‘ mood, so I might buy the Dell XPS 15 (2020) today. I'm just not sure whether to get the 16GB or 32GB. Is it better to splurge now and get it right immediately or to go with 16GB and then upgrade parts of it in a few years?Use case: office-y stuff, video editing 4K and Goat Simulator/Rollercoaster Tycoon.

@Gina i mean if yer already splurging... 32 will always outstrip 16 and is especially useful these days

@lindsays True, on the other hand, ddr5 is coming out soon, wouldn't an upgrade be cheaper in the long run? Also do I need that much RAM? πŸ˜…

@Gina Idk if it’s the best time to be buying now because of the high prices and tech shortages. I would also look at the latencies of both RAM and their speeds.I’m going to assume speed and latencies are the same for now. Since RAM prices are comparatively low nowadays, why not compare laptop 16 GB + 16 GB RAM sticks vs 32 GB RAM. Make sure the RAM you are getting is as fast as the RAM in the laptop! Otherwise I think it operates on the lowest speed.

@Gina I dont see the use for 32gb unless you're running multiple VMs. And certainly not for that price tag. I have 16 and rarely use more than 3.

@Gina Had old work laptopt with 32GB and also new laptop with 32GB RAM. Frankly I've never hit more that 12GB in use with GNU/Linux (multiple docker containers running, PyCharm, IntellijIDEA, chromium, firefox, slack). So although I have 32GB, I can say that it is mostly for future proofing and isn't really used. Not sure how resource hungry are video editing workflows though.

@Gina I still use 4Gb and 3Gb on my two PC's.πŸ˜… But seriously the bottleneck is clearly 4K video editing. I think that 16Gb should be sufficient for that task.

@Gina I would check if the RAM is socketed or soldered on the motherboard. If so you could wait and buy it later. Will you benefit from it? For sure, especially with 4K video editing. Same goes for the NVMe drive. If it's soldered you might consider a bigger drive otherwise you can swap it later (probably for much cheaper than the upgrade price). Also if the XPS15 is shipped with DDR4 RAM it will be all you can use. You can't swap DDR4 with DDR5 RAM. In case

@Gina πŸ˜‚If you want to game, you can buy PC builds that would cost half the price of an XPS, with excellent performance ! But that would be a PC, that couldn't move, would be less sexy, etc.

@Gina @parasurv I'm also unsure whether you'd actually need 64Gb ! Get it if you can afford it of course, but if you're wondering whether you should or not get it, my advice would be : don't.I've always had 8Gb on my computers, and even though I wouldn't have to even think about it if I had 16, I know I wouldn't need 16, and there are always cheap tweaks to save some RAM (and some $$$ RAM money) β€” such as putting tabs to sleem, not having three open Electron apps, ...

@feyn Buying the 32GB version: €2519.Buying the 16GB version and then upgrading to 32GB: €1979 + €200-ish = €2179.The latter doesn't have touchscreen (1920 x 1200 instead of 3840 x 2400), but I could probably live without that. Also I don't have any use for the 16GB, since they don't fit in my current laptop, so uh hope I can sell them?

@Gina IIRC you work in IT, right? So you at least admin Windows regularly. I just don't use it for work, so I am more comfortable on Linux for basic browsing and any games I want to play work fine on it now. It is kind of annoying to need to borrow a friend's Windows laptop for stuff related to 3DS cfw. For some reason a lot of the tools are written in C#... luckily those requests are rare and my friends have just accepted me as the weird Linux person.

@Gina Makes sense. And when it comes to exams I'd rather just not add an extra thing to worry about with the VM and just use a Windows host. I use VMs for a lot but I just wouldn't want to worry about issues the day of.

@Gina Since I’ve been without USB-A on my mobile devices for half a year now:I was afraid that I’ll feel restricted by this but after replacing a handful of USB-B/A cables to USB-B/C I stopped noticing. We’ll see how that feels when the pandemic is over and I’ll be going to Hacker related events again. I guess I’ll have to get a portable dock for that purpose.

@GinaI am not ready to take that plunge because to me that slightly aged tech is still plenty useful. I now revive old tech for the sole purpose of using it throughout it's true life span. I love new tech of course but not to the detriment of perfectly good but old alternatives. I say get a hybrid that has both.

@Gina I'd go for 32 now. There are only 2 RAM slots in that model, according to the spec sheet, so if you upgrade to 32 later, you'll likely be throwing out RAM (unless Dell slots in a single 16 GB at the lower config, but I doubt it).And for video editing, the more RAM the better; whatever's in your timeline lives in RAM, so you're going to want a lot.

@Gina You need to max out memory if you want to edit 4K video. You might want to do some research on the specs on YouTube, finding the few capable reviewers. I haven't looked to see if he has one on this but Ant is very knowledgable https://www.youtube.com/user/antpruitt/videos

Why don't laptops come with built-in bluetooth dongle adapters? Like, I can connect any modern device wirelessly to my laptop with built-in Bluetooth stuff, but somehow a mouse requires a psychical dongle to be plugged in?I wonder how other people do this with USB C only laptops.

@Gina If you have, say, a Dell business monitor with USB slots on the side and belly, you can use that for static/changing peripheries. I like to use those ports for sd card copying, computer is tucked away behind the desk.Mine is a Dell P2418D. I can wholeheartedly recommend it, 99% adobeRGB coverage makes photography and video so much more enjoyable. My wife picked one up after working for a week on it (this is a trend, she took my trackball too T_T).

Where your rollercoasters were too extreme so people started throwing up on the roads and you need to employ sweepers to sweep their vomit from the pavement so that other guests wouldn't get mad :DOr where some rollercoasters were so extreme that people wouldn't want to go in so you had to drag an innocent person into the queue and then cut his path so he didn't have a choice to go in.Hehe, childhood :)

@Gina It's worth considering a Dell Inspiron. They aren't quite as sleek looking as an XPS machine but they are still quite compact, and powerful (with new 11th gen Intel CPUs) while offering more ports (USB C and 3), and excellent upgradeability for a modern laptop (two memory slots, and m.2 SSD, WiFi NIC, and battery are all replaceable. So it will be longer before your laptop has to be recycled.Plus, Inspirons cost quite a bit less. You could get more power for your money. πŸš€
