Why does everyone hate it when I say "sorry"? It goes beyond just individual tastes of individual people, it's some goddamn societal taboo. I can avoid saying it in presence of people who have some unpleasant feelings for that word, and I've been trying to, but I want to know why.

@Caecilius I say "sorry", for literally any reason, like someone's favorite pen broke, and they go "aw don't say that".

@Caecilius I'm not asking for forgiveness, it's just an expression of compassion, I didn't do anything bad in this situation.

@comrade_lecter Oooh I see what you mean!Idk why people react to that way to such expressions of compassion.

@comrade_lecter @Caecilius it's pretty odd, "sorry" is a very common expression of compassion and yet at least one person I speak to regularly always says "it's not your fault" like, yeah obviously it's not?

@Zest That reminds me of a tendency I have to take jokes literally when I know they're jokes because I have no idea how to respond in another way. Maybe that's what's happening?

@comrade_lecter it's commonly considered polite to say "sorry" when something bad happens to someone. I mean, saying "I'm so sorry" when someone's pen breaks might feel a little patronizing, but you're allowed to say what you want to say, other people are allowed to have whatever reaction they have to what you say, and you're allowed to let them have that reaction and not need to make them comfortable.
