I've been looking around and it seems like in rural areas, filling a large mailbox with concrete before embedding a smaller one inside is more common than I thoughtWhen I was way off in the boonies, I only saw only one example of this. Most of the other mailboxes are basically the beat up cheap steel affairs so I guess kids (immature grownups?) still do drive around with baseball bats/pipes etc... hitting mailboxesThe biggest downside I see is the potential for injury and/or lawsuits

@cypnk I don't think you see this in the UK; however I think most of ours are cast-iron and I suspect would blink at the baseball bat. We have one here that survived a 1500kg bomb next to it: https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/the-undamaged-red-post-box-manchester-england

@penguin42 We used to have some of those here as well, but alas, many have fallen to disrepairMany colonies, like in Sri Lanka, still have the same style of mailbox

@cypnk Ah something useful we exported :-) Actually, a much better picture is: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-manchester-36533594 which must have been taken on the day or near it.

@cypnk if some idiot goes around destroying mailboxes, he gets what he deserves if it fights back a little

@cypnk it seems really bizzare though if folk could actually get sued for a relatively non-violent way of protecting their property in a country where its seemingly allowed to shoot at people for the same reason, and I would have thought someone who hit the concrete protected box might be jarred and maybe get sprains/bruises but nothing lasting..

@vfrmedia The thing is the appearance of a booby trap. It is indeed perfectly legal to shoot someone under certain circumstances ("castle doctrine"), but embedding in concrete may have the appearance of enticing vandalism Setting traps is not covered by all home defense laws, and this can indeed be seen as a "trap" of sortsAlso, the U.S. is particularly litigious so even minor injuries (or even attempt to injure) can elicit lawsuits

@cypnk I did wonder about that, but I wouldn't have considered it a booby trap as much - although as another Brit mentioned, our (public) post boxes are made out of much more solid stuff to start with, quite literally bombproof..A separate post box for a house is uncommon here except in country houses with smart gates (remotely operated) and even then the postie is more likely to have some way of being granted access to the main doors (especially with the rise in signed for parcels)

@vfrmedia One clever trick I've seen around this is to place the mailbox next to a utility pole or similar obstacle, where the object is on the side of normal traffic. Of course, there's nothing preventing someone from making a u-turn and coming back to harm the box, but it does make extra work for themAnother is to fix the mailbox between two trees (if there are two already there) or plant two trees on either side. If they're fast growing and have thin trunks

@piggo The problem may be if that person suffered an injury. In the U.S. folks can file a lawsuit for any reason, or no reason at all. There's also the possibility that if a vehicle were to hit the box accidentally, it could prove fatal

@cypnk I doubt the law would be on the side of a dipshit hanging out of a car without a seatbelt on, swinging a baseball bat to destroy private property. That’s at least three laws broken by the claimant before there’s even a case to laugh out of court.@piggo

@wion You'd be surprised what things people have done and have the law come to their sideHere in New York, someone I know got in trouble for placing boulders on their lawn (even after some idiot drove into her house) because that "may cause injury to other reckless drivers"I'm not even exaggerating. That's barely a paraphrase. These kinds of things keep happening because the law allows it@piggo

@cypnk @wion there is a urban myth here of a american woman suing a microwave manufacturer for not warning her that killing a cat in a microwave might hurt the cat.but maybe it really happened if this is how it goes in the us

@tbm @cypnk @piggo If someone hits a patch of ice and goes off the road into your concrete mailbox and it severely injures them...Structures in the right of way are supposed to be designed in such a way as to break while causing minimal injury if they are accidentally struck (e.g. road signs, powerline poles, etc.)
