@Gina yup. Either 15 or 17, cuz thermals on 13 probably aren’t that great for editing.

@newt Oh they look nice, thanks!Looking at laptop comparisons on this website, and I'm only now finding out now that some laptops allow you to connect an external GPU?? 🤯 "While its Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 graphics aren’t going to stack up against some of the top-tier competition, thanks to the Thunderbolt 3 port you can supplement it with an external, desktop GPU for more demanding projects"https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/buying-guides/the-best-laptop-for-video-editing

@Gina I would never buy a laptop that wasn't a MacBook unless I intended to wipe it clean and install some linux distro on it. maybe a Thinkpad.

@Gina Does it have to be _now_? Because, almost all of the larger manufacturers _just_ announced their newest lineups which are probably going to be available from March/April onward .. ie whatever you buy now, it's last-gen hardware (and especially for video-editing, you probably want a current-gen GPU)

@moritzheiber Hmm that depends. I don't necessarily need the newest laptops, but if it means that the next best in line is a lot cheaper then it might be worth the wait. On the other hand, there's always something new coming out.

@Gina I know this isn't what you want to hear, but why would you want a laptop for 4k video editing?I always recommend a solid desktop for heavy tasks and a simple laptop powerful enough to type on and that's it. It's a lot easier to replace components or gradually upgrade the GPU and so on if you go with a desktop and a cheap low-power laptop. Do you really need to edit 4k video on the go? If not, go with a desktop.

@Gina bust? Dem 😕Mine are all by @tuxedocomputers It's a mixed bag but there is at least a human on the line when contacted 😅They do offer power horses but my only top of the line model also came with just one fan for gpu and cpu and is a constant reminder how much a combined heatpipe sssssucks for it can not be quiet ever 😅 It's possible they have that covered by now but I wouldn't get my hopes high.

@DankyNanky nah not necessarily, it's just that I really dislike the 'intuitive' design of Apple products. For me it doesn't feel intuitive at all. Also the hype, ugh.

@Gina We just went through this, albeit for a much easier use case, general work, not 4K video editing. It's obvious you need the CPU cores, RAM and SSD that will be costly, but even more important IMO is the service policy. It's why we bought at a local store whose warranty service we've already experienced. They have an great appointment system, the people are trained and patient. They do the job.

@Gina (2/2) Service because you're probably not going to be able to fix a laptop. Sending it to some distant service center is a big time sink. There's no back and forth about the problem, so sometimes, they don't fix it or can't reproduce it.

@Gina Check out: https://laptopwithlinux.com/They are right there in your country. I just bought a laptop from them and they not only put it together and shipped it in just a few days but they installed the distro of my choice with the username I chose and I even asked them to partition the hard drive and they did that. The service was incredible and you can even choose the "premium" thermal paste!😂 Or get it barebones.

@Gina Somewhere on their site they say that the Taiwanese manufacturer - Clevo - is the same used by System76. Whatever you do, though, avoid tuxedocomputers, I made the mistake of choosing them first and it has been and still is an ongoing hassle of epic proportions. (And the hardware is from the same manufacturer.)

@Gina Fair enough. It took me a while to get use to it but it became quite intuitive after using it for a while (perhaps intuitive is subjective to the way Apple OSX works). If Linux had the same cross-platform services I’d use Linux however, so I’m not too fanboy. As for the hype the new M1s are amazing. No doubt about it. I’d not be excited about any other product on the market right now. System76 make good units though?

@katie @Gina +1All the characteristics of a laptop is what you don't want for video editing, let alone for 4k video editing. You want lots of CPU cores that run at 100% for LONG times -> heat. And 4k video editing on a 13-15" screen? I'd say a 27" would be the bare minimum.https://x0f.org/@FreePietje/105561073151792431

@Gina I have two System76 laptops, a Darter and an Oryx. They ain't cheap, but they are good. And their Pop!_OS (a well-tweaked version of Ubuntu) dovetails nicely with their hardware. The Bonobo is their top laptop beast, can rank right up there with high-end workstations if you throw in enough of the optional upgrades.
