@TheCam> built in torActually, you could use any browser with Tor, it's just a proxy setting… but built-in or not, it's a very bad idea. There are reasons why tor has it's own browser ans warns againt third-party browsers. One of then is browser fingerprinting, which defeats Tor's own purpose when people use random browsers with a too specific fingerprint…@calculsoberic

@calculsoberic You might already know it, but seems many people don't…So it's even more dangerous for her to use Tor without Tor Browser. Because false sense of security. And by the way, before someones claims otherwise… Tor's bottleneck is on the network side, 3 proxies with one layer of encryption each, and many nodes run by volunteers on slow xDSL network. Which makes it incredibly dangerous for people who don't know about browser fingerprinting (i.e. most users)1. @devnull Tor tries to warn people about these things, but a lot of people don't read the warnings. Similar reason to why you shouldn't torrent over it. It slows down the network and compromises people's anonymity. @TheCam

@calculsoberic I know Tok Project do their best to warn people. I'm of course not blaming Tor for this. But Tor efforts to warn people can't compete against people's don't-give-a-flying-fuck culture or against marketing bullshit from shitty browsers that claim there can replace Tor browser… A perfect example of the bullshit assymetry principle. @TheCam

@calculsoberic @devnull of course using tor as a piece of another browser is bad privacy practices, obviously use the real tor browser to be safe. As soon as I need to browse privately I'll use Tor Browser. I was just saying that brave what I used most, as I don't need that level of privacy right now.

@TheCam As I'd mentioned, I really did learn this the hard way. This group had stolen my identity and found out things like my SSN, address, phone number, real name, etc. And they tried to open credit cards and bank accounts in my name, and also tried to swat me (unsuccessfully). While that's an extreme example, it's kind of eye opening! As a result, I've worked to improve my privacy a lot. @devnull

@calculsoberic @abloo well it's now got a new reader that's for sure! I'm curious though, iirc didn't Deepdotweb get shut down for linking to the markets or was there more going on? I think money changed hands with market admins or something right? So long ago I can't remember details. I ask because are you taking risks by listing market URLs on your blog? A forum I'm a member of doesn't allow links to markets or sites that provide links for legal reasons.

@aspie4K It wasn't just linking to the markets, it was that they were using affiliate links, which made them money (kind of like kickbacks) for the major markets. Apparently, they made millions doing that! I'm not making any money from the links. @abloo

@aspie4K In order to make money from them, you have to attach an invite code, which is connected to your account on that particular market. Every time someone signs up to the market using your link, you make some bitcoin.

@calculsoberic @abloo yeah I thought it's because there was money changing hands somewhere, thanks for filling in the deets. It's crazy how much influence the DNM has over the drugs market in general too, like no one knew what Xanax was in the UK before pressed bars suddenly became a huge thing on the DNMs and dealers bought in bulk and resold. Now it's a whole "craze." Everyone in their teens to 20's knows about it.I assume you know about HBB, he and UKB literally created the UK Xanax scene.

@calculsoberic exactly the actual proper bad shit is not limited to the darknet, most people looking specifically for the darknet just wanna buy some drugs, tbh I see no moral issue with this at all. booze is the most dangerous drug of all and every shop sells it so why can't people choose to buy other substances to put in their bodies? It's insane to me.

@aspie4K A lot of the war on drugs is racially based anyway. It's a control thing. But that's a whole other debate. I was shocked a while back that just about everything you can find on the "dark web" you can easily find on a search engine, but some search engines remove them from the top results.

@calculsoberic oh I know all about the history of the "war on drugs" yes it comes 100% from American racism and was forced onto the rest of the world through the UN using threats of economic sanctions for nations who didn't want to comply... ironic when the US is the country with the opioid epidemic, but it's okay when it's Big Pharma doing the drug pushing I guess. The Sackler family are the biggest drug pushers in the world.

@calculsoberic thanks, the hashtag comes from Twitter where you have a lot of "autism parents" getting way more attention than actual autistic people, hence the #ActuallyAutistic hashtag, used by autistic people to basically say "yo, we can speak for ourselves." I guess my Mastodon instance is essentially an entire website dedicated to that idea.

@calculsoberic I was diagnosed as a young child and was told just before I turned 10 so I've known about my whole life. As a teen I ran a forum for autistic people which did mildly well but died out. I made this place because I figured the federation is a perfect way to create a community with a huge variety of people, plus it lets people on my instance connect to other instances relevant to their special interests (case in point with our darknet chat!)

@calculsoberic sorry if I wasn't clear, I didn't create a chat specifically for darknet talk, but rather I created this instance using Mastodon because autistic people have intense and often niche interests, which makes the fediverse a perfect place for them to interact with others who share whatever their interests happen to be. Drugs happen to be one of my special interests, both pharma and illicit, although the difference is very arbitrary. MDMA will even be FDA approved in a couple years.

@aspie4K Ah, I see. I took it as "made a Tor chat for people with these interests." And yes, I find drugs very interesting too. I did MDMA a long time ago and let me tell ya, it was a blast! (not molly though)

@calculsoberic #MDMA is straight up therapeutic for me in the correct set and setting. I rolled with a @Zahk who is a fellow #aspie and it was a seriously amazing experience. There's even been pilot clinical trials showing MDMA has a positive effect on #autistic adults and MAPS wants to pursue more #autism research once MDMA is approved for PTSD.I think #psychedelic medicine is the future and MDMA assisted therapy will be the future of autism treatment in adults. #LSD and #shrooms too.

@calculsoberic I've done a load of psychedelics from the big ones like acid to more obscure ones like 2C-B and aMT, I have found tripping to be a very positive experience for my mental heath and there's a growing body of science and clinical trials backing that up now, it's great. We'll look back at the days of putting people on SSRIs daily as archaic.

@calculsoberic I think a what is your second most used browser poll would be more interesting. The most used one is the one that is convenient. The second most used one might be the one that has features you want, but not necessarily ready for general use.

@calculsoberic yeah, all my server stuff runs openbsd. work stuff runs debian and I used to be a Debian Developer. i've done a bit of openbsd development to add support for amateur radio network protocols (hambsd.org) but haven't yet got anything included in openbsd itself.

@calculsoberic i'd advise against learning openbsd. the simplicity of it, the readability of the code and the complete documentation will absolutely ruin your ability to use anything else without feeling terrible. you'll wonder why the overbloated poorly documented thing has won and curse the world that has brought about that situation. you'll realise that it's not that good enough is the enemy of elegance, but that the usability, robustness and security of a system are not important. it is only profit that is important. when you measure tools in terms of velocity getting products to market and being able to exploit them and your customers it's clear that no one even acknowledged that a thing was "good enough", no one thought about what could have been, all they saw were dollar signs.

@irl That was very sneaky!! Yes, there's a little bit of a learning curve with text based browsers and the CLI, but once I get used to them, I like them best. Good examples: vi, vim, Weechat for IRC.

@calculsoberic a great example of simplicity bringing robustness and security in openbsd is the whole sudo thing that happened recently. openbsd doesn't use sudo in base, it uses doas, which you'll see has vastly simplified configuration:https://man.openbsd.org/doas.conf.5that's not to say that you can't have a bug in doas ever, you can, but so many less lines of code. you could read the doas source code (I have) and understand how it works. even if you don't know C you can still figure out the general idea.https://github.com/openbsd/src/blob/master/usr.bin/doas/doas.ci like having an understanding of what is actually happening in a system, because then i can really control it. debian was starting to feel like I couldn't actually control it anymore (NetworkManager, systemd, etc etc) with so many things changing so fast I couldn't keep up.

@irl I also like understanding what's happening in a system! It's worrying when there's so much going on that could potentially work against you and you don't know about it. My system uses sudo and apt 😆

       @irl I like this bit here The user is not required to enter a password.nologDo not log successful command execution to syslogd(8).persistAfter the user successfully authenticates, do not ask for a password again for some time.keepenvEnvironment variables other than those listed in doas(1) are retained when creating the environment for the new process.setenv { [variable ...] [variable=value ...] }
