I like fosstodon, but I'm not a fan of it blocking entire instances. I believe this control should happen at the user level, especially since it is so easy for users to do.

@nremind Part of the blocks have to do with blocking content that is illegal to host in the US (where the servers I believe are located)If you federate with a server that's hosting illegal content, then you are also hosting their content because you cache it

@brandon @nremind More than one of the others have hosted active harassment campaigns against Fosstodon users (like that time Spinster decided that Gina was the wrong brand of feminist – harassing women being a notably “women-first” thing to do, as we all know).

@brandon I see, thanks for the explanation. I'm not looking for dark web stuff or anything, but part of the reason that drew me to decentralized platforms in the first place is that I'm competent enough that I don't need a big brother helping me censor the bad shit on the internet. Also, fosstodon only gives reasons for about 20% of why specific instances are blocked, and some of those are not even for reasons of legality

@wizzwizz4 @brandon I would probably block that specific user myself if what you're saying is true. But I dunno, I would rather have that decision be mine than upstream. To me, blocking the flow of information upstream on this platform is no different than having a purely centralized platform. I guess this is a philosophical difference between me and fosstodon

@nremind @brandon It was a lot more than one user, harassing a lot more than one user. Believe me, we're better off without Spinster – and I'm saying that as someone who, a few months ago, asked the mod team to re-evaluate that block.I know what you mean, and I actually share that feeling. However, Mastodon isn't well-designed, so that's not feasible here. (You can't have interaction whitelist groups, for instance, which is one of many features necessary for that to work.)
