@amolith "They're sitting at a general purpose computer without the ability to do any general purpose computing." I couldn't resist this one ;p

@amolith and this is part of the problem "I didn't argue, it was really not worth my time. Instead I do what I normally do for people and Just make it work. " and he teaches Computing. At a school. Where this person also teaches. Yes, I know there's resistence to learning. Please note that both of these people hold the other in disdain. At least one of them needs to be less condescending to break the "I'll just fix it" so you don't have to learn anything cycle

@amolith The writer evidently isn't good enough to set up a transparent proxy. The internet should "just work". No-one cares about your proxy or weird academic site configuration.

@amolith A blog post in 2013, and the points of frustration are arguably now stronger than ever, years later.

@Xantulon I don't necessarily think that the author was condescending towards his coworker 🤔 I wouldn't be surprised if he actually was at the time but that's not the impression I got while reading at least. I felt it was more resignation, that they both had classes to get to and taking the time to explain what was going on in the background in a way that she could understand and retain would have taken longer than either had.Inn any case, I do agree. In these situations, mutual condescension does no one any gold

@amolith that post is from 2013, and things haven't gotten any better, really. The more pervasive and ubiquitous and *normal* computers have become, the less people know how they actually work.

@doenietzomoeilijk exactly. I feel like that's the general trend of the IT/tech/startup/whatever world too; people are always pile the abstractions up and lead often lead to thos same situation he's describing about computers.
