@miko @salixlucida How would you compare Keepass with other solutions?Previously I had tons of synchronization issues with LastPass between two desktops, phone & tablet, but it was in ~2017./cc @tomasino

@miko @salixlucida @tomasino was reading about LessPass, which would make syncing unnecessary. 🤔

@jussi @salixlucida @tomasino Well, it's hard to compare "vanilla" KeePass to, say, LastPass, since the core goals are a bit different. Most KeePass clients (or at least those that I'm aware of) are designed to be more of a local solution, which means that they aren't made to sync with any other devices at all.

@jussi @salixlucida @tomasino This effectively means that managing your password database(s) can be a major pain in the ass unless you either a) manually copy the password databases to each device every time you make a change b) use something like Syncthing, or c) find a client that has those functions.Vanilla KeePass also misses a few of the fancy things like password autofill, but those functions are fulfilled by third-party add-ons.

@jussi @salixlucida @tomasino TL;DR: It's hard to compare KeePass to most solutions since it's a pretty barebones thing, but most of the functions that are missing can be fulfilled by third-party clients and add-ons.

@miko thank you for the explanation! I do have a syncthing instance, should look into using it with KeePass. Right now considering between LessPass, self-hosted BitWarden and some KeePass related solution.@salixlucida @tomasino

@jussi @miko @salixlucida yeah, miko nailed it. I love that Lastpass has clients on every device that all sync well. My wife has Lastpass as well and we can share a folder of accounts with each other. Security audits and auto-password changing are nice features. The mobile experience is great for autofill in both web and apps. 1Password has a similar offering. KeePass is just simple stuff. You have to plug in lots of helpers to get close, but you control your data. Tradeoffs.

@jussi @miko @salixlucida also... I do this with LastPass (you can fork and modify for KeePass):https://toobnix.org/videos/watch/7723d336-96be-4559-8b3c-336daf6d7367

@jussi self-hosted #Bitwarden, because lastpass is closed source, and I'm not trusting a company with my secrets. Used KeePassXC before, but autofill & sync were meh.Been using bitwarden for about a year now, very happy with it.

@jussi @tomasino @miko I do not rely on third party sync solutions for keepassX, for security reasons and also to save money (most commercial password manager services cost money).I simply copy the .kdbx file daily, save the encrypted .kdbx (yes the .kdbx data is already encrypted, but I encrypt that file again with another private key) on an e2e-encrypted cloud storage. This is all manual but there's an advantage of not having to rely on a single point of failure.

@jussi Bitwarden, hands down! I’ve used quite a few others in the past. I’ve even written a front end for pass. But Bitwarden self hosted with bitwarden.rs eats them all for breakfast! And here’s why:
