Am I wrong to think that pensions are a terrible idea? Why does everyone seem to think it's best to let your company or government manage your retirement savings? Am I missing something?

@william_doyle At the time, they were a way to pay less by promising more in the future. Agreed - now even 401ks have too much employer visibility.

@william_doyle they were good about 20--30+ years ago. Especially for the working class that typically stayed at a job, public or government, for 25+ years.But I agree, in current day not good. I converted my pension from a big company over to my own 401k.Already making a better return and I don't have to worry if the company goes bankrupt.

@william_doyle the returns are guaranteed. They also were mandatory to be funded, but that had waned over the years.It made the most sense for companies who wanted to keep employees for decades. Once the MBA became a quick way to cut costs, it made no sense, and the 401k became more popular.
