a friend wants to use a free os but currently does a lot of windows gaming. supposing they can't use windows at all, is there a good option for them to run their windows games? can reactos handle games? is gaming with wine (or playonlinux) viable for gaming in 2021?i know this is a huge topic people talk about all the time, but i don't play video games much, so i've mostly ignored it.thanks for any advice!

@trashcat Gaming with Wine / Proton works great 90% of the time, assuming the game doesn't have an invasive anticheat built in.Lutris (https://lutris.net/) provides lots of one-click installs for lots of games too, so it's generally really easy to get into even if you don't want to get your hands dirty.I did mention anticheat though, which rules out a lot of multiplayer games. Things like Apex Legends and Rainbow Six Siege are known to not work for no reason other than that the anticheat sees Wine as a modified environment.Your friends gaming habits will really dictate how viable Linux is. If they play tons of competitive multiplayer games, it's probably not really possible. If they play mostly singleplayer games, it's really rare that you'll encounter something that you can't run. The state of things recently really super impresses me.

@trashcat Your friend can check https://protondb.com for whether or not their games will work.

@wizard@xyzzy.link @trashcat@www.librepunk.club seconding this: whether or not any given game works is, nowadays, almost entirely contingent on anticheat/drm support - and many of those work just fine nowadays, with the main one that doesn't being EasyAntiCheat.and there's in-progress patches for that, so it'll work eventually.
