I still don’t understand why ‘conspiracy theorists’ went down the “covid doesn’t exist/isn’t serious” route rather than the “it escaped a lab/was created in a lab” route because let’s face it; if a bull rages through your nearest Tesco Express you’ll look at the local farm not the post office…

@Raunchel @Ladyfat best theory I’ve heard so far is that viruses are just something cells make when cells are sick/dying. So people are in fact getting sick and dying from the unhealthy world I think? But then when you test them after they die you’ll find Covid because their cells produced the virus as a biproduct or something.

@Ladyfat I can think of at least two possible psychological explanations. a) maximum amount of denial, “escaped from lab” is not as far from the common view as “it’s all a hoax”. For someone who likes to feel they’ve figured out something no-one else has, this gives a bigger hit of satisfaction. b) Comfort. There isn’t really a dangerous pathogen that you could catch anywhere and from anyone. The real danger is more indirect and further removed.

@Gnomeshatecheese yes, I could definitely see it as a comfort thing. People who HAD to go out convincing themselves that there was nothing to be afraid of. I think where it went hideously wrong though was (like most viewpoints) attempting to force it on others.

@Help-me-hoagie-manThere's actually a whole school of thought* that denies the entire theory that pathogens (bacteria and viruses) are the cause of diseases. It's essentially a modern reworking of the miasma-idea, where disease is caused by living conditions or lifestyle. @Ladyfat @Gnomeshatecheese I do think most of it is comfort - if it's that serious I'll have to do more, pay more attention, sacrifice something I want. saying you are making a fuss about nothing is the default option for large numbers of people when it goes against what they see as their own interest.this is the worst though because refusing to take it seriously IS against their own interest.if you are super careful and you don't get it - because you didn't happen to run into someone with it - you and the feckless maskless don't care have the same outcome. so they think it's all fine. They can't see it's luck as much as anything and the more they go out and the farther they travel it's going to run out eventually.I'm still seeing so many people with very poor hygiene practices (masks under noses is the most obvious) because they still haven't understood how it transmits and WHY they are supposed to be doing it.

@Eleutheromaniac @Gnomeshatecheese @Ladyfat Sainsbury's driver had his like that on Friday. Some drivers don't even wear them, so I didn't say anything. The shopping is unloaded at the open front door - with me well back. I leave the door open for a min or so after he's gone and then everything is sorted into - leave for 3 days or wash in soapy water to go in the fridge.Trying to believe there is "no evidence of fomite transmission" isn't helped by there not being studies showing they actually looked. And if aerosol is the thing - it has to settle somewhere, else why worry about surfaces at all. If the virus dies on contact with surfaces they should be able to prove that by swabbing a covid patient's room! Especially the ones that aren't fully on oxygen yet.

@FeartnTired @Eleutheromaniac @Gnomeshatecheese We have a ‘shielded’ household member and our shopping has in the last year been placed into ‘Trug buckets’ on our driveway. I’ve never felt the need to get to know the drivers and the drivers seem more than happy to get the job done quickly without distraction. It’s only in the past couple of weeks that drivers have worn masks, but then again our rates here have madly multiplied since Christmas .

@Ladyfat @Eleutheromaniac @Gnomeshatecheese we have front steps, so it would be a long and laborious process getting the stuff up and into the house since it's heavy stuff like milk, veg and tins we get delivered. if it's at floor level - first it was in the plastic bags they supplied, now the driver unpacks it into our own large strong bags - I can drag it across the floor to unpack.
