the stream for my grandmother’s Zoom funeral was cut short because the funeral home was too cheap to pay $15 to Zoom to have a longer stream, so that’s how my pandemic is going.

@Hyolobrika like, seriously, it’s up all the time and I’ve been using it with my friends ever since the pandemic started and all anyone had to do was realize “hey wiggles spends literally all of wiggles’s time on the computer and has since wiggles was like 9 so maybe we should ask wiggles about video conferencing”I also, in addition to a Jitsi server, have $15, so they could’ve had that, too, if they’d asked.

@realcaseyrollins @Hyolobrika @counterfedi that’s an interesting observation. If a community starts out closed it has a chance to develop its own character. I found for instance no incentive to run a Matrix homeserver because there seemed to be no way for my community to make it “ours.”The ActivityPub world seems to be a little different because ActivityPub is so loosely defined, there’s a lot more character and diversity among homeservers.It’s a shame that Gab stopped federating. I am not familiar with the situation but I would be interested to understand the incentives that drove that decision.

I mean gab can run successful ads since a sizable chunk of its userbase is not using adblockers, they also sell things their userbase buys, other communities might be more used to a patreon model whereas a privacy heavy instance that has users connecting over anonymizing networks might only be able to accept crypto. And of course there is always the possibility of certain niche specific communities to have some niche specific way to address this problems.
