there is nothing wrong with eating bugs. merimutts would be less morbidly obese if it replaced meat.

@colonelj @Zyklon_Dan With prices rising all across the globe, how much are you willing to bet people shall be buying them if the price is much, much lower compared to its saner counterparts?

@Matatjahu @Zyklon_Dan maybe a few would, but the best way to get the public to eat bugs would be to tax meat heavily.

@colonelj @Zyklon_Dan Food prices are rising yearly. Just have bug-meat be half as expensive, and watch how, little by little, they go off the shelves. Once people convince themselves enough that this is the new normal, nobody will bat an eyelash.

@colonelj @Matatjahu I can go to my local stockyard and get cows and feed them on the cheap. Meat shouldn't cost as much as it does. We aren't nearly at the point of needing to consider protein substitution. Also if it gets to that point I'd rather be a vegetarian. I'm not scarfing crickets for s meal.

@Matatjahu @colonelj @Zyklon_Dan and then, little by little, bug meat products will increase in price to real-meat levels, that is if they don't position bugs as a 'premium product' in the first place. To be fair, anyone who eats lobster, prawns, shrimps, or crab is already eating bugs.

@colonelj You're not wrong. I'd rather the weight loss come from more Americans eating veggies, but low-cholesterol sources of protein might help.Steven Seagal learned the hard way against Gene Labelle what not eating veggies does to the digestion.

@colonelj Burgers are not obese because they eat meat. Even then, getting the same amount of protein from bugs comes at the price of getting more salt, which means more heart disease.

@colonelj I know, that wasn't my point. My point is bugs have more salt per gram of protein than meat.

@colonelj https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4781901/Basically, bugs are a good alternative in countries with widespread malnourishment (nigger cattle), not in places where people are fucking fat and riddled with heart disease.

@wageslave >Second, we find that many insect foods have a higher content of energy, sodium and saturated fat than conventional livestock. On the one hand, this suggests that these species are not suitable for promotion as alternatives to meat if the main priority is to combat diseases linked to over-nutrition, particularly since reducing dietary intake of sodium and replacing saturated fat with unsaturated fat is thought to reduce risk of heart disease. This study is only looking at overnutrition and assumes people would eat as many bugs as they will meat. Very possible, but i feel people would hesitate to eat as many bugs as it took to substitute meat, some bugs are healthier in this regard than otehrs, and another factor to look at is price, cost of production and market price. Some bugs have some nice calcium levels which means people who buy milk for it would not need to buy milk and save in that way. I suspect it costs much less to farm bugs as well. Bugs are small enough it's possible for people to do it themselves, etc.
