Bitcoin is a tech that is based on pure math and cryptography, it is decentralized and controlled by no one. Bitcoin unlike legacy finance cannot apply any form of discrimination or segregation to anyone. So what is the real reason behind attempts to block bitcoinhackers from freedom-oriented fediverse? Where the spirit of bitcoin differs from the spirit of fediverse? Being devided and disconnected we only play right into centralized platforms hands.

@tracyspacy wait can I have some context here? I know that Gargron used bitcoinhackers as an example to block an instance in Mastodon's doc, which is bad taste, but I'm not aware of attempts at really blocking this instance.I mean I don't doubt there's some retarded admin somewhere that already blocked us, but is there a relatively widespread attempt at blocking us?

@MilquetoastQT @jk3r @tracyspacy @verretor I don't think so. The motivation for decentralization seems to be the RESULT of pareto-predicted outcomes. So it should act as a negative feedback loop: on large instances, people without preexisting social connections might feel like they're unwelcome, like they're talking to a wall (as tons of people do on twitter), driving them to smaller instances. Also, overly huge monolithic social networks seem to have a way of homogenizing the kind of people who get popular-- I've met and interacted with more cool and funny people on the tiny instance I'm currently using than I did in about two years of actively using twitter. Pareto principle doesn't necessarily reward the "best", (in fact it seems to discourage them based on my experience) it only rewards those who are good at climbing their respective hierarchies.

@Bajax @jk3r @tracyspacy @verretor Paretos within Paretos lolI don't think feeling isolated on an instance will be a factor when you can (barring admin interference) talk to any user on any other instance. You can also follow any user from any other instance, and you can always check your "Following" timeline. Basically being a good admin just means not fucking things up. So there will be a lot of good admins, but, in theory, a lot more "bad" ones, or unpopular ones. Probably not 80/20 but certainly users won't be evenly distributed among all of the different instances. Some admins will have superior guidelines. It's really more about the unpopular admins lolMaybe you're right about being isolated though because I pretty much exclusively stick to reading TWKN.To your final point: "Best" is relative. People get popular for a reason. Namely, others like them, even if you don't. I think the Pareto principle appies here as well lolI think you think most people will just read what other people on their instance will read, but I think variety will win out. I don't think users on a particular instance will matter as much as the whole network. Once again, the main thing that will "matter" is shitty admins and people moving away from them lol and where will they move to? To admins with the best reputation. "This already has a lot of users. I guess this guy is a cool guy." We didn't have that option with Twitter. It was join or nothing. That's why Twitter got so big. It was also why people left MySpace for Facebook. There was no cross-communication between the sites. You could only talk to each other on one at a time. The Fedi is different. So if an instance gets big in the Fedi, it will be for a completely different reason: reputation of the admin. Now I'm not saying there couldn't develop a Twitter situation where a bloodthirsty Commie creates an instance and gets a lot of bloodthirsty Commies to join. Or a pedo instance. I'm not saying the market is full of good people. But most people in the world are appalled by the child sex market, even though such a market exists. I hope you get my metaphor.

@MilquetoastQT @jk3r @tracyspacy @verretor There are SOME barriers on the fediverse that make the instance you choose relevant-- for example, I don't see the flood of anime from pawoo even on my "whole known network" TL because the instance I'm on filters it, but I can still get to it and like/rate etc. My point is that decentralization in this case makes the social network customizable as if it was a small affair without sacrificing worldwide connectivity. I think this is a FAR more appealing solution than anything that Twitter could do, even introducing something like groups. Groups are too explicit to give you any kind of spontaneity or variety. In fact, they seem tailor made to AVOID seeing that kind of thing. Because instances are a result of less explicit groupings, they're more random in terms of what kind of person they attract. It seems likely that when people move away from certain instances, they MAY sometimes move to the biggest instances for the reason you gave-- but what if they specifically want to get AWAY from big instances? They're more likely to set up their own, or make an instance just for a small group of friends-- sort of the same pattern as discord.tl;dr: fediverse's decentralization allows a negative feedback loop, letting users avoid the homogenization of large platforms if they want without hobbling their access to the network as a whole

@MilquetoastQT @jk3r @tracyspacy @verretor Also:>I don't think feeling isolated on an instance will be a factor when you can (barring admin interference) talk to any user on any other instance.People don't feel isolated on Twitter because of a LACK of options for who to talk to. What's going on on Twitter is that there are TOO MANY options, and because there are so many people, most of them want nothing to do with you. That's how human psychology works. We WANT to splinter off into smaller groups when they get too large. Its how our primate ancestors avoided resource competition and pointless wars (kind like we're having in this country now!) The current paradigm of "social" media is anything but-- it's more like regular, classic media, where there are a few channels everyone watches, and most other people just consume their output. This is alienating.(And as an aside I think it's possible the belligerence between the Red and Blue teams in the US might be a direct result of this alienation)

@Bajax @jk3r @tracyspacy @verretor The problem with Twitter is that it's actually hard to find new subjects. It's all curated. They have no TWKN option. A lot of numbers with no variety. Artificially. That won't happen on the Fedi. At least not artificially. Maybe through groupthink. But then I just mute and pay attention to the eccentrics.

@tracyspacy @verretor I think that open discussion requires participants to be open to challenge their views. Mabey the progress is not becouse people feel safe. (feeling safe != being safe)I think that "code of conflict" that was in Linux made it so solid and well written, that now this is the system on almost all supercomputers, routers and mission-critical devices. We don't need to feel safe, we need freedom.
