> The British Ministry of Defence has opened discussions with France and Germany about signing up as an observer on their next-generation Main Ground Combat System program, according to government and industry officials in the U.K. and Germany. What is the chance that a tank designed based on requirements coming from several countries all with somewhat different armies, doctrines and strategic concerns won't be a disaster.

@pony It'll work about as well as the interservice bullshit-riven F-35, right? Probably NATO will come up with a way to make the F-35 provide that tank with air support or something else totally inappropriate.

@Alon I've heard that the US is now advancing their new tank program (again) and someone figured they keep four crew members, despite most likely finally switching to an autoloader, and the person may operate some uav's around the tank.

@pony Israel is keeping 4 crew members because the tanks get mobility killed so often, and not due to enemy action either, that they need 4 crew members to repair the tracks.

@Alon I guess that helps too, but merkavas don't have an autoloader in any variant anyway?

@pony Yeah, because the IDF figured that they need 4 people in the tank anyway, so why bother putting an autoloader?

@Alon my understanding is that autoloaders aren't actually so good, on soviet tanks, they are slower than manual loading, but probably the advantages of unmanned operation (or at least unmanned turret) are prevailing?

@hardbass2k8 this is not the first such project by any means, but they usually all ended up in failure, realizing that the tank satisfying all reqs is too expensive and impractical, and each participant then made tank more fit for their needs, partially based on the design

@hardbass2k8 @pony it will run on five Bosch E-Bike Batteries so in case of a crisis those can be acquired from the surrounding heaps of unused E-Bikes.
