It's always a good time to read this paper by Max Tegmark: https://arxiv.org/abs/0905.1283TL;DR The multiverse is real, the only question is how deep the multiverse rabbit hole goes.

@urusan nonono, it is almost midnight, please don't lead me in this rabbit hole! I need this sleep pretty bad haha

@hejowhat I dunno, it's a preeeeetty interesting rabbit hole, and may very well change how you think about the whole universe!

@urusan You are right. Sleep is overrated anyway.

@x51 I think this paper was the genesis of that book.

@urusan There is some criticism of the theory, but I really like it. I think it smooths out a lot of rough edges in physics.

@x51 Interesting, which parts? While Max Tegmark convinced me, the idea of a mathematical universe is definitely not an open and shut case. The lower levels of the multiverse hierarchy have quite solid evidence though.

@urusan The standard “is it observable argument” and “incompatible with Godel”. Piggliucci had a good skeptical view too: https://www.science20.com/rationally_speaking/mathematical_universe_i_ain%e2%80%99t_convinced-127841

@urusan I ended up realizing I believed something like this after it was a natural consequence of modal structuralism as a mathematical ontology and modal realism.…though I feel like his jump to the Computable Universe and abandonment of uncountable structures wasn't really all THAT well-motivated.

@urusan Also his cosmological interpretation of quantum mechanics is really quite nice.
