@josh It all depends on the method you're using, humans are animals with a natural knack on picking up languages. What are you learning?

@josh it is especially hard as an adult, but Actual Classes and learning the grammar and structure of the language is key to having a full understanding of it. i strongly disavow duolingo-esque services.

@MaceDinduDuo, Memrise, and Drops. It just doesn't stick and I freeze up when I have a chance to use it in person. I go completely blank and all the practice is worth shit.

@ethot @josh I don't know, I picked up English when I was a late teen (reading 4chan) and I got to learn French quickly afterwards, as around 30% of English is Frenchie loanwords. Are you in your 50's?

@josh @MaceDindu Maybe this gives you some insight: I learnt English by first learning how to understand it, and afterwards, learning how to produce it. Learning my first foreign language made me understand that those two are very separate skills. If you get to the point where you can comfortably understand ~50% of casual stuff that you read/listen, you should start to chat with foreigners then. When I spent a lot of time immersed in the language, reading in it and listening it, that's when it became natural to produce it. It was awkward at first but after a few times you get the hang of how to structure sentences.

@green @ethot @josh the trick with the brain is learning at least two languages before late teens end, if you don't do it while you're young, your brain isn't as malleable and just can't do it as good. I can't remember the name of the phenomenon, but the younger someone learns a new language, or multiple, the better they are at learning a new one

@josh @MaceDindu remember that native speakers appreciate that you are trying. slow down and find your words. don’t be afraid to stumble a little. also, learn grammar so you can make up your own sentences and talk around whatever preset phrase you were meant to have memorized.

@theblessing @josh imo having a one on one tutor to supplement a class is what really will make or break someone learning a language

@Tropical_Paradise @josh it’s definitely different for everyone, but in my experience, Actual Classes help solidify the base of the language, engaging in written communication like online on social media, games, forums, etc helps your understanding and comfort with creating thoughts in the language, and living it/immersion/speaking it helps pronunciation and conversation

@josh I can see that. I'm much more competent reading/writing French than I am speaking it. There was an Irish polyglot on youtube whose videos I watched many years back... (k, just looked it up, it's Benny Lewis). Anyway, this whole thing was that he was living in Spain and was having basically the same trouble you're having. His advice is that you just have to kind of force yourself to try to make conversation, and that the people you're speaking with will appreciate your effort, and that you shouldn't sweat the mistakes you'll inevitably make. You might check that out.

@josh You've been living in at least 3 different countries over the course of 3 years and haven't learned even the most basic phrases so you could show at least a bit of respect for the locals and be able to communicate. Mexican migrants coming to the US at least provide very cheap and menial labor, while you've refused to work for almost 7 years to keep your site up, resorting to e-begging instead.Absolutely pathetic.

@josh Language-learning autist here. Doing shit like watching films/TV in your target language can help a surprising amount even with subtitles on. Managing the Farms seems to take up a lot of time for you, but even listening to Slav music while working or playing SS13 with it on in the background can help. The online apps like Duo and Drops do little besides new vocabulary, and it really isn't a replacement for actual classes unfortunately. For Russian, I studied mainly by doing boring as fuck drills where you write a sentence and "convert" it into all the different grammatical cases until it stuck. If it's any consolation, every time I've tried to speak a foreign language the other people would be visibly happy I even tried speaking their language. It feels like a lot of countries know that most Americans don't really have an interest in learning a foreign language and our education is shit at teaching them, so they're happy to see a mutt trying their best.

@josh @MaceDindu those apps are only really good as additional practice to more involved/structured learning. Protip: find other learners to practice with, so you'll be on similar levels and won't embarrass yourselves. t. Language instructor
