@dustinthewind as we know it, yes. There's no reason it couldn't exist in local networks, but my local bitcoinA would not be compatible with your local bitcoinB. Bitcoins only exist in the accounting records of all those computers who keep track of it. If the only computers keeping track of my bitcoinA are now on my local network, and you the same, when you want to give me a bitcoinA my accounting network doesn't even know you exist let along have any bitcoinA's. And likwise me bitcoinB.

@dustinthewind but specific to your "no internet" theory, if there were no way to route cryptographic data between computers, there's no way to synchronize ledgers. And computers or at least specialized machines realistically need to be involved to create the security needed to prevent human tampering.

@dustinthewind if no internet? You think transactions are slow today, just wait for trying to sync the blockchain ledger updates across dial up modems. In theory you could do biz with paper and barcodes but verification and chain updates will take forever. What if banks maintained the ledger, you'd show up and transact & the banks would do massive sync updates between themselves periodically. Its all trust based.
