That sucks π At the recommendation of a lot of people on fedi, I went out on a limb and grabbed the limited edition Kobo Aura ONE. I honestly think I got my money's worth and absolutely love it. The massive screen is awesome, battery lasts two weeks, it has more storage than I'll ever need, and the backlight with a blue light filter is wonderful. When first turning it on, I did go through the mess of logging into my Kobo account but I've never purchased any books from them or borrowed through Overdrive; I just throw ePubs in it from Calibre. I had no idea that they would just completely stop supporting devices like that though; once mine gets to that point, KOReader will be a very compelling option ;)https://gitlab.com/koreader/koreader/You might also be interested in The Open Book Feather. It's an open hardware eReader with some other cool features. I haven't delved too deeply into the project but it's certainly worth following. https://hackaday.io/project/168761-the-open-book-feather

@chriswere That's indeed terrible and you touched many points I agree about pretender companies. I wish people would stop hyping up companies or services that are just "not-x" while actually not solving the fundamental problems with x. Just say no to walled gardens, proprietary formats, mandatory registrations, ad-based revenue models and just generally anti-consumer (and anti-human/planet) tactics.

If you are looking for any tablet, my grandma uses a Samsung Tab4. I think it runs on Android 4.4. You can use F-droid and Nextcloud on it. So downloading apps and syncing books shouldn't be a problem either. It is slow enough to discourage you to do anything else on it. But still can be used for reading RSS.At the end of the day, it is all just text πThinker in me wonders whether there is e-ink display for RPi4 !

kobo is just like a printer: Oh you want to read text files that you moved to internal storage? I can't do that I need an update via internet first. printer: want to print black and white? don't have color ink so no.

I've got a 2016 (I think) Kobo Aura Mini for about 60β¬ new (plus 20β¬ for the case) and I'm quite happy it. I've dropped it so many times that the screen doesn't work super well anymore (touching the screen, not the visibility). I'd like to have a model with buttons at the bottom I think like the more expensive ones. Also, highlighting and notes don't work that well plus no real way to export those unfortunately (unlike with the Kindle coupled with GoodReads). I think, all in all, you get what you pay for: they only really make money selling the ebooks from their store (Kobo has got some DRM free books, [see here](https://switching.software/tools/kobo-search/) ).I don't really use the internet nor do I update the ereader that often. I have an update it's been asking me to do for a couple of months now. I suspect it's indeed the first boot. Koreader looks cool but it's not really an operating system as far as I understand. It's more of an app, you can download it on an Android phone btw.

Putting stuff on a kindle works well with Calibre. At least the version in this house. Currently reading *Frankenstein* on it.

@chriswereIn Germany we have the brand Tolino which is quite open and can be used without signing in. It is also available in other European countries.

@chriswere That would be pretty cool, except how do authors distribute for the Tolino reader, since most use Amazon, and Amazon is certainly not going to give up their share of people's reading time. Or not for a long time, anyway.

@pajlow @chriswere Tolino are just rebranded kobo devices. (Or rather both Kobo and Tolino are Brands which sell devices by Rakuten). And their openness really is pretty good. You don't even need Calibre or something, they function just like any USB stick would, even for different fonts!

@servant_of_the_anime_avatars @chriswere @pajlow Now that's actually pretty awesome. I think that eventually something is going to give and the ebook landscape will be open once again.

if youre going to go the tablet route then theres the onyx boox ereaders that use android as the OS. i got the nova3 last month and im liking it so far. you dont need to sign up for any account anyway but i couldnt tell you much else about it, whether its easy to put books onto it etc. what i did was install syncthing on it which was the main reason i went with an android device. ive had a kindle for a few years but i found it too awkward having to use calibre to add books, so now i just manage books on my laptop and everything is synced across. (unfortunately i havnt figured out how to get syncthing to work in the background so i have to open the app to start things syncing)next thing im going to try out is wallabag to i can save articles from a web browser or my phone and then have access to them on the eink screenoh another downside is that you need to add the google playstore to access syncthing but i might try sideloading the apk at some point. so overall its ok but its a fair bit of hassle as well so i dont think its the dream device you are looking for

I share your pain, it is a bit shit the way Kobo does things. After spending a fair bit of time online looking for a good candidate, I did get a Kobo Aura for a relative. There were many (old) references to ways to avoid the Kobo registration, I thought I could get away with it. Turns out nothing worked out. After messing with the sqlite file for an hour, I gave up and borrowed the only computer in the house to get that stupid proprietary software installed to create the account and pretty much unlock the darn thing (I did not know about several of the projects mentioned here in the comments though). My old PocketBook never asked anything in comparison. Such a terrible first user experience.

@chriswere Why can't ebook readers just open text files and do just that? π How hard can it be to make something similar to The Open Book Project, but with the quality of the bigger ebook reader companies? π©
