       @MultiBitcoiner I wouldn't use them. @nvk can read them.

       @pete @nvk didn't nick Szabo once say "Trusted 3rd parties are security holes, except if that trusted 3rd party is nvk" ?

       @karozagorus @MultiBitcoiner @nvk one reason yes! Also in general, if I'm going for decentralization, I should go for decentralization. Not that hard to setup either. There's a almost one-click option that sets up one as a new VM on digital ocean.

       @MultiBitcoiner @nvk nvk has three letters in his name. That's how you know you can trust him.

       @karozagorus @MultiBitcoiner @nvk you could, and yes it would leak your IP. Though you could use a VPN.VPSs are cheap. The one I'm running this on is their second lowest, at $10/month.

       @karozagorus @MultiBitcoiner @nvk I'd suggest a.VPS then. They're pretty easy.

       @karozagorus @MultiBitcoiner @nvk so mine is being hosted on digital ocean. I haven't used a Bitcoin only VPS for awhile, so no idea what's good these days.

       @pete I heard lunanode is being recommended. Vultr accept Bitcoin as well but to start with you need a cc when signing up I think.

       @goodc0re it's a pity Scuttlebutt is a bit too immature to really work out. Truly decentralized, to the point where you don't even need the internet.

       @pete @karozagorus @MultiBitcoiner @nvk there are also managed services like https://masto.host which can cost a little less, but you're kinda recentralizing and giving up some control in exchange for less maintenance. I used to run on DigitalOcean but switched because I didn't feel like occasionally wrestling with hiccups and updates, etc.

       @keith @karozagorus @MultiBitcoiner @nvk do those services provide you access to the databases so you can move to a different one?

       @pete @karozagorus @MultiBitcoiner @nvk I can't say for sure because I've started fresh with each move, but I'm assuming that if you request your db, they'll provide it. Best to ask before signing up.

       @keith @karozagorus @MultiBitcoiner @nvk Good question: when you nuke your Mastodon database, does it cause _others_ to stop following you? (Assuming a public account)

       @pete @karozagorus @MultiBitcoiner @nvk if I'm understanding your question correctly, no, it doesn't. I remember terminating a previous single-user instance and then seeing the ghost of my profile in lists of follows/followers. It was a dead link, obviously, but the ID and avatar/header remained in those lists. I'm pretty sure boosts and maybe some other vestiges also stick around.

       @pete @karozagorus @MultiBitcoiner @nvk actually, I'm not sure. I previously killed an account by deleting the DO droplet, and that profile continues to appear on the lists of some followers.Docs: "If the database disappears, all the accounts, posts and followers on your server will disappear with it."Kinda sounds like you keep followers from other servers, but I'm curious if it breaks things.https://docs.joinmastodon.org/admin/backups/

       @keith @karozagorus @MultiBitcoiner @nvk I think you're seeing it on other servers because those servers cached that info. Dunno when - or if - it'd ever be deleted.

       @pete @karozagorus @MultiBitcoiner @nvk that makes sense. Otherwise fedi identity theft. "I didn't know I was a furry."
