So, how can I convince my family to use matrix.org instead of WhatsApp?

@brightneighbor I hope you mean the protocol, not the instance?

@brightneighbor Try mentioning that WhatsApp will be getting ads. That it's run by Facebook, that Facebook uses their data to sell them stuff or ideas and influence their decision-making and thought-process with propaganda, etc

@brightneighbor It all depends on what your family is like obviously, on their level of technical proficiency, ...

@brightneighbor why not signal instead of matrix? It's similar to WhatsApp also in terms of features and UI

@brightneighbor Just delete your WhatsApp account and email them the element.io URL. If they want to talk to you they'll just have to sort it out.

@kriive I like the way signal does stuff but it's only issue right now is #decentralisation That's why I'd go for matrix.org

@kriive @brightneighbor Signal requires that you use Android or iOS in order to get Signal on your desktop. It also requires that you use a real phone number. Both big problems for privacy.

@zigpress @brightneighbor well, yeah, but if you need to convince your family to migrate from WhatsApp I don't really see how ditching the mobile phone and the phone number is a viable option. I guess you have to make compromises to up your privacy game.

@kriive @brightneighbor My compromise is to keep Skype installed. For now.

@zigpress @kriive I guess I'll have to leave whatsapp as a compromise for now, and they say that updating the app forces me to agree to their terms and I have a very old version that didn't even show that warning, So as far as I'm concerned my data might be still safe. And there's a nice app that shows trackers that apps try to access and blocks them, it shows me that WhatsApp is trying to access Facebook and Google but they got blocked several times.

@zigpress I like the idea and done it with Instagram and Snapchat, the issue is that I can't talk to the same students in my class without the app, So I might try and seize communication there several times until they find an another way to contact me, Thanks for the suggestion!

@Matter I think it's a nice idea to tell them that it'll be getting ads soon, Though they don't care about their data being sold they think that they don't have anything to hide, I did enough to convince them about that stuff though I hope they listen to me when I'm switching to matrix.

@Matter I think they have enough knowledge to use element.io, the issue is if they actively use other 'Social' apps that make them forget what they're supposed to do.

@brightneighbor yeah but it's also overcrowded, often has terrible performance, and it's not great to centralise everyone on there. One of the main points of Matrix is that it's federated, so it would be better to not go on the main, huge, server. If you can find a local group that has an instance, that might be a better alternative. Gotta make sure you trust them to maintain it though.
