In the summer of 2019, the alt-right social network Gab migrated to the decentralized "Fediverse" of social networks after being booted from mainstream financial services and hosting solutions. Almost immediately, Gab was met by a dedicated movement to isolate it. The movement was largely successful; within a year, the Gab CTO announced they would leave the Fediverse. This talk will cover how moderators, activists, and developers in the Fediverse used human moderators, strong moderation tools, representative codes of conduct, and no small amount of organization to promote healthy online spaces.We’ll review how some of the challenges faced by centralized platforms, which struggle with their own size and scale, have been addressed in networks of smaller, community run, more moderated servers. In the debate over how to make a healthier internet, the open platforms and open protocols in the model of the Fediverse may have some of the best resources to isolate bad actors, including Gab.Derek Caelin is an Innovation and Data Specialist at Counterpart International (CPI) with experience in open source technology and social media. He has helped activists deploy technology for social good at CPI, PeaceTech Lab, and the United States Institute of Peace. In writing this article, Derek spoke with 80 people, primarily on Mastodon, including 12 interviews of Fediverse administrators and moderators as well as hate speech monitors and experts in dangerous speech. @colonelj @ethot I'd say it was a self own by torba, as a majority, but what led to his poor decisions was certainly not empty sites "ddosing" him. Post logs or stfu with that bullshit. It was his anti porn crusade of banning (reaction to loli) and his dev's meltdown about people being mean to him on his testing domain (lots of video evidence here, unlike the ddos story) but I'm sure Steven has his wild theories to the contrary. He did the leg work you see, he asked an invested party to make themselves look good and then took them at their word. That's detective work.

@ethot @dsm @colonelj I wasn't going to listen to the whole thing because the quote up top (and many of the things mentioned in this thread) shows it's probably full of total bullshit.The anger at some instances at Gab was pretty interesting though, to the point where it's probably the only instance that got explicitly blocked in many apps, and even in Mastodon Libraries! (Alex showed me hashed URLs that would cause failures; and all of them were Gab or dev-Gab domains).The fact that Fedi went so hard after Gab and not FSE, quodverum (they weren't as big back then I guess), or any other instance is really telling. Gab has a presence before Fedi (they were pretty much corporate censored just like Daily Stormer--hosting DNS and payment all blocked by nearly everyone) and when they forked Mastodon it really started a shit storm never seen before. Their name and brand probably did more than anything to cause that reaction.But JudgeDread an others can attest that they were full of spambots and were terrible at backups or maintaining any type of integrity or testing. I don't think we'll see the insane reaction again though unless Parlor suddenly decides to implement ActivityPub

I use to listen to a podcast called "Citation Needed" that tried to dispel media myths, but a lot of it degraded to semantics over words like 'working class' and they'd bring on 'experts' who'd state almost no reasoning of scientific evidence. I've culled a lot of bullshit podcasts this year since I no longer commute .. also been reading fewer books though.

The bigots of American slavery days weren't satisfied with just having a black slave, they were outraged at even the thought of a black person being free, and demanded all of them be treated as animals. Gab didn't went out of it's way to tell other instances how they should treat LGBT people or minorities or people of certain political or religious ideologies. And for most part, they were either indifferent or happy that certain instances chose to defederate with them ("less degenerates" is how they usually phrased it). But certain Mastodon moderators did see fit to destroy Gab for their political ideologies. Not so they could keep their users safe, that could have been easily done with just a instance suspension, but because they are intolerant and bigoted towards people of other political views.

@ethot @apconf @moth Those first couple of months in mid 2019 were what I was referring to, and it's kind of why they were shadowbanning on instance wide levels from so early. I think the trolling did a lot but I'm not really hyping it up so much as I am saying no one really wanted Gab, no matter the circumstances the best they got was ambivalence, the worst they got was loli hentai and furry and vore and goatse, and I stand by whoever says the collective trolling that everyone did was more than the blocking mastodon did.
